Recessed LED Puck Lights in the Step Nose — Most Popular Solution

LED puck lights recessed directly into the step nose or riser are the most common indoor stair lighting solution in Canada. Discreet, robust and durable, they recess into a 2" or 3" hole drilled in wood or concrete. The PK600R (round) and PK600S (square) are the most popular for residential stairs — low profile, light directed downward and slightly forward to illuminate the tread without glare. The PK200 is smaller still, ideal for narrow stairs or compact landings. The PK700 provides higher light output for double-height or multi-level staircases.

LED Strips Under the Step Nose in an Aluminum Profile

For a continuous, modern light effect, LED strips installed in type 85 or 86 aluminum profiles recessed under the step nose create a clean light line across the full width of each tread. The profile 86 (stair underside recessed) disappears completely into the structure — only the light is visible. Result: a designer staircase that looks like a luxury architectural installation. This solution is ideal for contemporary floating stairs in wood or glass. Brightness and color temperature are adjustable based on chosen strips (2700K for warmth, 4000K for contemporary design). LED Lighting for Handrails and Railings

Integrating LED strips into the handrail or railing creates a spectacular grazing light effect — light runs along the wood or metal of the rail for the full height of the staircase. Aluminum profiles with frosted diffuser eliminate visible hot spots and produce a perfectly uniform continuous light line. Compatible with wood, aluminum or stainless steel railings. This solution is also ideal for stairs leading to the basement where natural light is absent.

Wall-Recessed LED Lights in the Stairwell

For enclosed stairwells (stairs between walls), wall-recessed LED fixtures or LED puck lights installed in the wall at mid-tread height on each step create vertical wayfinding lighting. This solution lights effectively without requiring high ceilings or a hanging fixture. In 2700K for a warm interior corridor, in 3000K for a more contemporary look.
