LED handrail lights

LED handrail and stair railing lighting is one of the most elegant and effective design solutions for showcasing a staircase — indoor or outdoor. A lit handrail visually guides users from first glance to the last landing, improves safety in dark corridors and creates a distinctive architectural effect. LEDCO offers multiple LED solutions suited to every type of railing and handrail — wood, metal, glass or composite.

LED Strips in an Aluminum Profile — Universal Handrail Solution

The most widespread solution for LED handrail lighting is installing a LED strip in a frosted diffuser aluminum profile, mounted under the handrail or recessed into a milled groove. Light diffuses downward along the full height of the railing, creating continuous wayfinding without any visible hot spots. In 2700K or 3000K for a warm ambiance, or in RGB for dynamic color effects. The aluminum profile protects the strip from impact, ensures heat dissipation and provides a professional finish. Compatible with all wood species, brushed metal railings or tempered glass guards.

Flex Neon LED — The Solution for Curved Handrails

For curved, spiral or transitional staircases, flex neon LED is the ideal solution — its flexible silicone sleeve adapts to any bend radius without kinking or losing uniformity. Its continuous silicone surface produces a perfectly uniform light line without any visible LED dots, even around tight curves. IP67 rated for outdoor applications. Available in warm white (2700K, 3000K), cool white (4000K-6000K) or RGB for dynamic effects. The silicone sleeve resists UV, extreme temperatures and cleaning agents — ideal for exterior deck or balcony handrails.

LED Integration in Wood Handrails — Technique and Finish

For solid wood railings, the most elegant LED integration technique is routing a continuous groove in the underside of the handrail, into which a flat aluminum profile containing the LED strip is recessed. Result: fully integrated lighting with no visible cabling, with light appearing to emanate directly from the wood. Any cabinetmaker or millworker can execute this technique. LEDCO supplies the profile, strip and driver sized for your rail length and supply voltage (12V or 24V).

Outdoor LED Handrail Lighting — IP65 and Freeze Resistance

For exterior handrails — home entries, decks, balcony stairs — a minimum IP65 rating is required. IP65 or IP67 LED strips in IP65 aluminum profiles withstand Canadian weather: rain, frost to -40°C, de-icing salt and summer UV. In 3000K for warm light compatible with porch lighting. The LED driver must also be outdoor-rated (IP67 recommended) and connected to an AFCI or GFCI breaker per the Canadian Electrical Code for outdoor circuits.

Technical Tips for LED Handrail Lighting

  • Strip length → measure total railing length + 10% cutting margin
  • Voltage → 12V for short runs (under 5 m), 24V for 5 m and over (less voltage drop)
  • Strip wattage → 5-8W/m sufficient for handrail (ambiance and safety lighting)
  • Aluminum profile → choose a profile width matched to the handrail cross-section
  • Diffuser → frosted (opaque) to mask individual LEDs and produce uniform light
  • Connections → use IP68 waterproof connectors for strip segment joins
  • Driver (power supply) → IP67 for outdoor, concealed in the newel post or wall

Contact LEDCO to select the right strip, profile and driver for your railing length, mounting type and indoor or outdoor use.
