LED soffit lights
LED soffit lighting is one of the most popular choices for illuminating the exterior of a home in Canada. Installed in the soffits beneath roof overhangs, recessed LED lights shine down on facades, entryways, walkways and decks while remaining hidden within the structure. Unlike wall sconces or exposed floodlights, soffit-mounted recessed fixtures are invisible during the day and create a clean, polished lighting effect at night. Running on standard 120V, they are compatible with existing residential wiring and require no low-voltage power supply. From Montreal to across Canada, LEDCO offers a selection of LED recessed lights optimized for exterior soffit use — with a clear explanation of the different beam angles available so you choose right the first time.
DLX — 40° Narrow Beam — Best Choice for Soffit
The DLX round recessed lights (LCDLX3R / LCDLX4R) and square (LCDLX3S / LCDLX4S) are the best-suited fixtures for soffit installation. Their 40° beam concentrates light downward rather than spreading it sideways across the house face — which is precisely what causes glare with wide-beam formats. On a wood soffit with horizontal slats, ribbed vinyl or aluminum channel panels, the 40° beam creates a light-and-shadow play across the surface texture, adding depth and character to the home's architecture after dark. These recessed lights run at 8W on 120V, enough to cover the area beneath the roof overhang without creating glare for pedestrians or neighbors. The 5CCT (adjustable color temperature) technology means a single SKU covers all preferences: from 2700K (warm light, matching the traditional porch bulb) to 5000K (cool white, for contemporary-style properties). The 3" format (LCDLX3R / LCDLX3S) is recommended for narrow soffits — typically less than 12 inches wide — while the 4" format (LCDLX4R / LCDLX4S) suits wider overhangs.
DLS — 90° Beam — Versatile Option for Standard Soffit
The DLS 4" standard recessed light (LCDL-DLS4-5CCT-9W-WH) delivers a beam of approximately 90° — midway between the DLX 40° and the very wide-beam formats. In a soffit, it illuminates a broader area beneath the overhang but remains acceptable in terms of lateral glare, particularly when the soffit is deep or the fixture is positioned toward the front of the overhang rather than back near the wall. It is a solid option for homes with large under-roof areas to cover, where fewer fixtures are desired while still maintaining good ground coverage. The DLS is also available with 5CCT adjustable color temperature and runs at 9W on 120V.
DLF and Disk Formats — Avoid for Soffit Use
The DLF 4" flat recessed light (LCDL-DLF4-5CCT-WH) is popular indoors for its ultra-slim profile and very wide beam of approximately 120° to 160°. In a soffit, this beam width creates a problem: a significant portion of the light projects horizontally across the home's facade, creating unwanted glare and reflections on the exterior cladding rather than directing light downward. The aesthetic effect is far less controlled than with a narrow beam. The disk format (LCDL-DISKCB5W) is even more problematic: its radiation angle exceeds 210°, making it the least suitable format for soffit use. Its light spreads in all directions — including upward and sideways — generating maximum glare and detracting from the architectural presentation of the home. Both formats are excellent for indoor applications — kitchen ceilings, hallways, laundry rooms — but are not recommended for soffits.
Soffit Enclosures with LED Bulb — The Simple Solution
For homeowners who want to add soffit lighting without cutting new holes or replacing existing junction box wiring, soffit enclosures for LED bulbs are a practical solution. These enclosures mount into a soffit hole sized to the box and accept a standard E26 base LED bulb — meaning bulb replacement is quick and simple without removing an entire recessed fixture. For a better aesthetic result and improved beam control, soffit enclosures pair well with a directional PAR20 or PAR30 LED bulb that concentrates light downward. This is the ideal solution for older homes where the soffit was not designed to receive full recessed fixtures, or as a starting point before a more complete renovation.
Choosing the Right Size and Color Temperature
The 3" or 4" fixture format is often dictated by soffit width: a narrow soffit of 8 to 10 inches suits a 3" format that stays discreet and does not visually overpower the soffit face. A wider overhang of 16 inches or more can comfortably accommodate a 4" format. For color temperature, 2700K is recommended to match the warm light of existing porch sconces or garage lights — visual consistency across the facade matters for overall curb appeal. 3000K offers a slightly whiter, crisper light that is still warm but with more neutral color rendering. 4000K and above produces a more commercial, less residential feel for soffit use — best reserved for industrial-style or contemporary properties. The 5CCT technology on the DLX and DLS fixtures allows color temperature adjustment on the fixture itself at installation time, without needing to order a specific SKU in advance — a practical advantage for projects where multiple units are ordered.
