Why protect your LED fixtures from surges?

An LED fixture contains an electronic driver that is sensitive to voltage spikes. Nearby lightning strikes or utility switching can send surges of several thousand volts through the wiring. The surge protector absorbs that energy and diverts it to ground before it reaches the driver.

Parallel connection: how it works

In parallel, the surge protector is wired next to the driver, across line, neutral and ground. It does not carry the fixture's load current: it stays idle in normal operation and, during a surge, diverts the excess energy to ground. It is the simplest and most common connection.

The wire-nut version connects to the fixture leads with no proprietary connector: handy for retrofitting existing fixtures from different brands.

Installation

The surge protector installs inside the fixture housing or in the junction box that feeds it, with wire nuts. It connects to line, neutral and ground; a good ground is essential to its effectiveness. Installation must be done by a qualified person, in accordance with the electrical code.
