Illuminate Differently: Easy Fluorescent to LED Replacement

Millions of T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes, shop lights and 2×4 troffer panels still equip offices, retail spaces, warehouses, garages and basements across Quebec. These aging technologies consume 30–50% more energy than their LED equivalents, require regular lamp replacement (every 2–3 years for standard T8s), contain mercury that complicates disposal, and produce flicker and hum that fatigue occupants. Converting to LED is today the most profitable lighting decision a property owner or building manager can make — return on investment in 2–4 years in most cases, then net savings for 10–15 years.

LED T8 tubes: the simplest replacement

For existing fluorescent fixtures in good condition, the direct-fit LED T8 tube (also called Type A) is the simplest replacement: it installs in existing G13 sockets without any fixture modification, keeping the electronic ballast in place. No wiring, no special tools — installation takes under 30 seconds per tube. An 18-watt direct-fit LED T8 replaces a 32-watt fluorescent T8 producing the same or greater light level, thanks to 120–140 lm/W efficacy versus 80–95 lm/W for fluorescent. The bypass LED T8 (Type B), which requires bypassing the existing ballast to power the tube directly at 120V, offers long-term advantages: without a ballast, there's no electronic component that can fail and leave the tube unpowered. System lifespan increases and consumption drops a further 10–15% versus Type A.

LED shop lights for workshops and warehouses

In garages, workshops, basements and storage spaces, surface-mount LED shop lights replace classic 2×4 foot fluorescent shop lights. A 40-watt LED shop light produces 4,000–5,000 lumens — equivalent to two 32-watt T8 fluorescent tubes (5,000 lumens at fixture output, after ballast and diffuser losses). It's slimmer, lighter, easier to install and contains no moving parts or glass susceptible to breaking. LED shop lights are available in 2 and 4-foot lengths, linkable end-to-end to cover large surfaces with a single electrical connection. For warehouses with standard height (3–5 meters), the 4-foot LED shop light in linked configuration is the most economical and fastest to install. For heights above 5 meters, LED high bay fixtures are preferable — their more concentrated flux reaches the floor with less loss than a shop light's wider distribution.

LED retrofit panels for 2×2 and 2×4 troffers

In offices, retail spaces and institutional buildings equipped with drop ceilings with 2×2 or 2×4 foot fluorescent troffers, the LED retrofit panel installs directly into the existing troffer frame in under 5 minutes — no ceiling demolition, no frame replacement. A 40-watt 2×4 LED panel produces 4,000–5,000 lumens with CRI 80+ and perfectly uniform light distribution, without the flicker and hum of magnetic ballasts. 4000K color temperature is most common for offices and retail, with 3500K and 5000K options available. Hydro-Québec energy efficiency subsidy programs cover part of fluorescent-to-LED conversion costs for commercial and institutional buildings.
