A well-lit painting is twice as beautiful. A poorly lit one looks dull, flat or washed out. Lighting an artwork — painting, photograph, sculpture, tapestry — is a discipline in its own right, requiring specific equipment: high color rendering sources, no UV radiation that degrades pigments, and a precise beam that illuminates the piece without spilling onto surrounding walls. Track lighting — the reference for galleries and versatile spaces
Track lighting on rail is the most versatile solution for artwork lighting. A ceiling rail positioned approximately 30–50 cm in front of the wall and at 30–45° from the vertical of the piece allows precise spot orientation for uniform surface illumination without reflections or shadow zones. Heads pivot and tilt independently, enabling repositioning when the hanging arrangement changes without modifying the electrical installation. A 4–8 foot rail with two to four spotlight heads effectively covers an artwork hanging wall. Narrow-beam spots (15° or 24°) concentrate light precisely on the frame without dispersing into aisles or adjacent walls — the beam concentration highlights the work by contrast against the dark background, creating a dramatic draw for the eye.
CRI 95+ and zero UV radiation
CRI 95+ is essential for artwork lighting. At CRI 90, a painter's palette subtleties are perceptible. At CRI 95+, every color nuance — oil glazes, photographic skin tones, watercolor ochres — reveals its full richness. Insufficient CRI flattens colors and turns a complex work into a dull image.
UV radiation is the primary enemy of paper or canvas artworks. Fluorescent and halogen sources emit UV that progressively fades pigments, inks and textile fibers. LEDs emit no measurable UV radiation — they are inherently safe for artworks, unlike traditional sources. This makes them indispensable for valuable collections, art galleries and museums.
Narrow-beam recessed spots for architectural integration
In residential or commercial spaces where discretion matters, narrow-beam recessed spots (15–24°) integrate invisibly into the ceiling and direct light precisely onto the artwork. Their profile is far more discreet than exposed track while delivering comparable results. They suit hanging corridors, residential entries or premium office spaces where ceiling aesthetics must remain impeccable. For optimal positioning, recommend a downlight at 30–45° from the artwork vertical, with a beam narrow enough to cover only the canvas surface and a few centimeters of frame.
