LED SPORT FIELD LIGHTS OUTREMONT
Outdoor sports field lighting is one of the most demanding LED applications. Required lux levels are high (200 lux for a municipal field to 1,000 lux for televised competition), pole structures are tall (20–40 meters), surfaces to cover are vast, and glare control requirements for players and spectators are strict. Modern high-power LED floodlights meet all these requirements at two to three times better energy efficiency than the metal halide or sodium vapor fixtures they replace. LEDCO carries LED floodlights for outdoor sports fields, DLC certified and compliant with IESNA RP-6 standards.
Illuminance levels by sport and competition level
Lux requirements vary significantly by sport and competition level. Municipal soccer played in the evening requires a minimum of 200 horizontal lux at ground level. A recreational football field requires 300–500 lux. A sports complex hosting filmed or broadcast matches requires 750–1,000 lux with strict uniformity control (min/max ratio below 1:3) and glare rating (GR below 50 per EN 12193). For baseball, required lux varies by zone: 500 lux minimum on the infield, 300 lux in the outfield for recreational leagues. For tennis, 300–500 lux depending on level, with particular care to avoid the glare that disrupts ball tracking. Our team performs custom photometric calculations for each field per applicable standards.
High-power LED floodlights for pole structures
Sports field LED floodlights mount on steel structures 20–40 meters tall depending on the surface to cover and required lux levels. Floodlights from 500 W to 1,500 W reach competition levels from significant heights, reducing the number of poles needed and civil engineering costs. Optics for each floodlight are selected for the required beam angle: narrow (10–20°) for distant zones, medium (40–60°) for central areas. Thermal management is critical: floodlights often operate several hours per evening in variable conditions (summer heat, winter cold). Our floodlights integrate high-performance aluminum heat sinks and components rated for continuous operation at –40°C — designed for Quebec climate conditions.
347V compatibility and control systems
Municipal and institutional sports complexes typically operate on 347V or 600V distribution. Our sports field floodlights are available at 120-277V or 120-347V depending on model, with no additional transformer needed for institutional installations. A DALI or 0-10V control system enables zone-by-zone and competition-level dimming from a centralized control panel. For municipalities and institutions managing multiple fields, a smart lighting management system can schedule automatic activation per field reservations, reduce power to 30 % between matches and cut lighting 30 minutes after activity ends.
