WHY CHOOSE ALUMINUM PROFILES FOR YOUR LED STRIPS ? SCARBOROUGH

An LED strip installed without an aluminum profile is like an engine without a hood — it works, but it's far from optimal. The aluminum profile isn't just an aesthetic accessory: it's the component that transforms a bare LED strip into a finished, professional and lasting fixture. It fulfills four essential functions: light diffusion, thermal dissipation, mechanical protection and architectural finish. LEDCO offers a complete range of aluminum profiles for LED strips — recessed, surface-mount, corner, cove, stair — and cuts them to each project's exact dimensions via the Builder tool.

Uniform diffusion: eliminating the granular effect

An LED strip without a diffuser produces a line of distinct light points separated by slightly darker zones between each LED. Even with a high-density 120 LEDs/m strip, this hot spot effect is visible in spaces where the strip is seen up close — under cabinets, in niches or on stair treads. The profile's frosted diffuser cover distributes light across the entire lens surface, transforming the point line into a perfectly continuous, homogeneous thread of light — like a fluorescent tube, but with all the elegance and efficiency of LED. Diffuser covers are available in three finishes: frosted (milky) for maximum diffusion with no LED visibility, satin (opal) for a compromise between diffusion and light transmission, and clear for maximum transmission with slightly visible light points. For most residential and commercial applications, the frosted cover is recommended — it gives a finished, professional fixture appearance regardless of the strip density used.

Thermal dissipation: extending strip lifespan

Heat is the primary enemy of LED components. As the LED junction temperature rises, luminous efficacy decreases and lifespan shortens. An LED strip fixed directly on a wood, plaster or plastic surface cannot properly dissipate the heat generated by the LEDs — junction temperature rises and the strip ages prematurely. An aluminum profile, thanks to aluminum's high thermal conductivity (160–200 W/m·K), acts as a passive radiator absorbing and distributing heat generated by the strip across its entire surface, maintaining junction temperature 30–40°C lower than a strip without a profile. In practice, a 10 W/m LED strip in a well-conducting aluminum profile can see its lifespan extended by 30–50% compared to the same strip stuck directly on an insulating surface.

Profile types: recessed, surface, corner and cove

The recessed profile fits into a routed groove in wood, plaster or concrete — it sits flush with the surface and becomes virtually invisible during the day. It's the preferred choice for stair nosings (slim 8–10mm profile), bookshelf rails and dropped ceilings where a perfectly integrated finish is sought. The surface-mount profile attaches directly to the surface with screws or double-sided tape — the fastest to install, ideal for kitchen under-cabinets, bar counter undersides and display shelving. The corner profile mounts on sharp edges of walls, columns and counters to create 45° or 90° accent lighting — popular for kitchen island edges, TV furniture corners and wall niche angles. The cove profile mounts at the top of the wall to hide the strip and project light toward the ceiling for indirect lighting — the classic solution for luminous sky effects in living rooms and bedrooms.
