LED LIGHTS FOR CEILING BULKHEADS
Ceiling bulkhead lights turn a simple box-out into a design feature. A bulkhead, also called a soffit, a box-out or a dropped ceiling, is everywhere in contemporary homes: above kitchen cabinets, around an island, along a hallway or in an entrance. Well lit, it adds depth to the whole room. LEDCO lights each of its surfaces with 3 and 4-inch slim downlights, a 10 W-18 W recessed linear light, aluminum profiles and LED strips.
Three surfaces to light in a bulkhead
A bulkhead hides plumbing and ducts, defines the zones of an open-concept space and offers three surfaces to light, each with its own product:
- The underside: downlights or a line of light illuminate the counter, the island or the walkway below the bulkhead.
- The vertical face: a recessed profile draws a line of light facing the room.
- The cove: a strip hidden at the top throws light onto the main ceiling.
You can light just one of them or combine all three. That layering is often what works best.
DLX and DLF slim downlights in the underside
In the underside of a bulkhead, height is limited, often between 10 and 20 cm. Slim LED ceiling downlights are made for this: the 3 or 4-inch DLX, round or square, and the flat 4-inch DLF fit into the box-out without their housing protruding into the structure. A row of evenly spaced downlights lights the counter or the walkway of a hallway, in 3000 K for a living space, closer to 4000 K for a working kitchen. Mounting frames prepare the opening in the drywall for a clean installation.
The DLT 4-inch trimless downlight for a flush finish
For a bulkhead with a clean design, the 12 W DLT 4-inch round trimless recessed light, also available in a square version, blends into the drywall: no trim ring protrudes, all you see is the light. Above an island, a row of these downlights creates targeted task lighting. Together with the downlights in the main ceiling, it visually sets the island apart from the rest of the kitchen.
The 10 W-18 W recessed linear light: a line instead of points
Rather than a series of points, the 10 W-18 W LED recessed linear light draws a continuous line of light in the underside of the bulkhead. It emphasizes the length of a hallway or an L-shaped kitchen and lines up with the cabinetry. In an entrance, it naturally draws the eye into the house.
RGBW DLF and DLS downlights to change the mood
In a living room, a finished basement or a home theatre, the bulkhead can also change the mood. The 9 W DLF 4-inch round slim RGBW downlight and the 9 W DLS 4-inch round RGBW-CCT downlight add colour to white: a crisp white for everyday use, a soft tint for a movie or an evening with friends. Ordered together, they tune the whole bulkhead to the same mood, with no extra fixture.
A recessed profile on the vertical face
On the vertical face of the box-out, the one facing the room, a recessed aluminum profile leaves only a line of light visible. It can light the top of the cabinets, artwork above a sideboard or the texture of a hallway wall. In neutral white at full intensity, it gives precise light; in warm white, dimmed with an LED dimmer, it turns the bulkhead into an architectural feature in its own right. The custom builder cuts the profile and strip to the exact length of each face.
LED strip in a cove: indirect light from ceiling bulkhead lights
An LED strip placed in a cove at the top of the bulkhead throws light onto the main ceiling: the room is bathed in diffused light with no visible source. In 2700 K or 3000 K warm white, this indirect lighting complements the downlights and creates layers of light that are much appreciated in living rooms, primary bedrooms and wide hallways.
The cove is best planned during construction: gypsum mouldings for LED strips then become part of the box-out. In a renovation, a cove profile fastened in the corner of the cove holds the strip in position.
Technical tips for ceiling bulkhead lights
Measure the clear height of the box-out. With 10 to 20 cm, the DLX, DLF and DLT slim downlights install without touching the structure.
The cove must hide the strip. It has to be deep enough that the strip cannot be seen from the floor, or the indirect effect is lost.
One white per function. 3000 K for a living space, closer to 4000 K above a working counter, 2700 K or 3000 K in the cove.
Line the light up with the cabinets. A row of downlights or a line parallel to the cabinetry looks intentional; any offset is noticed right away.
Plan for dimming from the start. An LED dimmer on the profile or the strip takes the bulkhead from task light to ambiance.

Bulkhead Lighting FAQ
What size of downlight works for ceiling bulkhead lights?
Most often 3 or 4 inches. The underside of a bulkhead usually offers between 10 and 20 cm of height, and the DLX, DLF and DLT slim downlights are designed for that tight space. For a continuous line rather than points, the 10 W-18 W recessed linear light is the alternative.
How do you create indirect ceiling lighting with a bulkhead?
You hide an LED strip in a cove at the top of the bulkhead, facing the main ceiling. The cove is formed with a gypsum moulding for LED strips in new construction, or with a cove profile in a renovation. In 2700 K or 3000 K, the light spreads without its source being visible.
What is strip lighting?
It is a flexible band fitted with diodes, cut to length and housed in a profile or a cove. In a bulkhead, it gives a continuous line of light, with no visible dots behind a diffuser. It runs on low voltage from a transformer.
Which LED profile suits a kitchen bulkhead?
On the vertical face, a recessed profile that shows only a line of light, for instance above the cabinets. In the cove, a corner profile fastened in the angle. The custom builder cuts profile and strip to the length of each face.
Can you show me examples of ceiling bulkhead lights?
Yes, our accomplishments show them in real settings, including Maison Prestige in Candiac. For your own project, send us a photo of the bulkhead and its dimensions, and an advisor will suggest the right combination.
