2x2 or 2x4: the format is already written in your grid
Ceiling LED panels come in 2x2 (600 x 600 mm) and 2x4 (600 x 1200 mm) formats, the two standard dimensions of T-bar suspended ceilings. The choice is therefore made by your ceiling: you count the openings of each format, and the panel drops straight into the grid without modifying the ceiling. Edge-lit flat panels, with the LEDs around the edge rather than behind the surface, give uniform diffusion with no bright spots, appreciated in offices where people work on screens.
Flat panel or LED troffer: what changes above the grid
The troffer is the other major family of recessed fixture for suspended ceilings, with a deeper housing than the flat panel. The choice between the two depends mainly on two things: the look you want and the free space above the grid. In a building renovated floor by floor, a single type of fixture is chosen to keep a uniform look from one floor to the next: LED troffers are among the options to compare before launching the project.
0-10V dimming: panels that talk to the sensors
Panels and troffers alike benefit from dimming. Commercial LED panels that are 0-10V compatible dim from 0 to 100% from a low-voltage signal, the protocol used by occupancy sensors, daylight sensors and timers in commercial buildings. 0-10V dimmers and controllers are sized according to the number of panels on the circuit, respecting the dimmer's maximum load.
The right tone for an office: 3500 K or 4000 K, CRI 80 and up
As for colour temperature, 3500 K suits comfort over long working days, while 4000 K favours concentration; selectable-tone panels let you decide at installation. A CRI of at least 80, ideally 90 or more, improves document reading and colour perception. For ceilings that call for special mounting, LED panel light accessories complete the installation.
The steps of a floor-by-floor replacement
A panel project is planned on the drawings, before the first tile is lifted. The move from fluorescent to LED, tubes included, is detailed on the LED fluorescent replacement page; for the panels, in order:
- Count the openings: how many 2x2, how many 2x4, per room and per circuit.
- Look above the grid: the available clearance decides between flat panel and troffer.
- Choose the tone once and for all: a single colour temperature per floor, for a uniform look.
- Plan the dimming: a 0-10V wire to every panel if sensors or timers are on the program.
- List the rooms without a grid: drywall, corridors and technical rooms are handled with other fixtures.
Drywall ceilings: 10W-18W linear downlight and mounting frames
Not every office has a suspended ceiling: renovated conference rooms, reception areas and executive offices often have a drywall ceiling. Technical tips for an office LED troffer or panel
Measure the opening, not the old fixture. A 2x4 grid is checked with a tape measure before ordering; some older ceilings have non-standard modules.
Check the clearance above the tile. A troffer needs more depth than a flat panel; a ventilation duct too close settles the question.
One tone per floor. Mixing 3500 K and 4000 K in the same open area shows immediately from one row to the next.
Pull the 0-10V wire with the power. Coming back to add it later costs more than planning it, even if the sensors come later.
Respect the dimmer's load. The number of panels per 0-10V circuit is limited by the dimmer or controller; count it before wiring.

Does an LED troffer replace a fluorescent one without modifying the ceiling?
Yes, that is the whole point. The 2x2 and 2x4 formats match the standard openings of suspended grids: you remove the old fixture, connect the new one and drop it into the same opening.
What is the difference between an LED panel and a troffer?
The panel is flat and thin, with a smooth surface and uniform diffusion. The troffer has a deeper housing and a lens, in the spirit of the old fluorescent fixtures. You choose according to the look you want and the free space above the grid.
