Recessed LED troffer panels are the current standard for lighting offices, classrooms, clinics, retail spaces and any T-bar suspended ceiling environment. They directly replace aging 2x2 and 2x4 fluorescent troffers with superior luminous efficacy, better visual comfort and reduced operating costs of 50 to 70 percent. 2x2 and 2x4 LED Panels for T-Bar Suspended Ceilings
LED panels for T-bar ceilings come in 2x2 (600x600 mm) and 2x4 (600x1200 mm) formats that drop directly into existing suspended grid systems. A 2x4 panel delivers 4,000 to 5,000 lumens depending on wattage (30W to 50W), representing a significantly higher utilization coefficient than equivalent T8 fluorescent tubes. Quality commercial LED panels have a power factor above 0.95, avoiding power factor penalties in commercial buildings. A color rendering index (CRI) above 80 — ideally 90+ — improves the perception of colors on documents, screens and work materials.
Edge-Lit UGR below 19 Panels — Open-Plan Offices and Computer Workstations
Low-glare edge-lit panels with UGR below 19 are the solution for work environments with computer screens. The Unified Glare Rating (UGR) below 19 is the EN 12464-1 standard for offices — beyond 19, direct or reflected glare on screens reduces productivity and causes visual fatigue. Edge-lit technology places the LEDs at the panel edge rather than in direct backlight, creating perfectly uniform diffusion without visible hot spots. In an open-plan office of 500 m², switching from fluorescent tubes to UGR-below-19 panels can reduce employee visual complaints by 40 to 60 percent according to ergonomic studies.
0-10V Dimming — Precise Control and Additional Savings
The 0-10V compatibility of commercial LED panels allows linear dimming from 0 to 100 percent via an analog low-voltage signal. This is the standard protocol for building lighting management systems (LMS): occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting sensors, timers and preset scenes all connect through this 0-10V signal. A properly calibrated daylight harvesting system can reduce lighting consumption by an additional 30 to 50 percent in well-windowed areas. 0-10V compatible dimmers and controllers are sized according to the number of panels on the circuit, respecting the maximum load specified by the dimmer manufacturer.
DLC Certification and Hydro-Québec Rebate Eligibility
DLC-certified (DesignLights Consortium) LED panels qualify for Canadian utility rebate programs including Hydro-Québec. DLC Standard requires a minimum efficacy of 90 lm/W and CRI of 80 or higher, while DLC Premium demands 120 lm/W and CRI of 90 or higher. For a commercial renovation replacing 100 fluorescent 2x4 troffers (128W each) with 40W DLC LED panels, the power reduction is 8.8 kW. With 3,000 hours per year of operation and a rate of $0.09/kWh, annual savings exceed $2,400 — before counting installation rebates. Payback is typically 2 to 4 years.
