Choosing LED dining room lighting by the shape of the table
Before style and finish, the shape of the table decides the fixture. Here is the match that works in almost every case:
- Rectangular table: a linear suspended luminaire, centred along the axis, spreading light from end to end.
- Round or square table: a centred suspended ceiling light, with a diameter of at least half the width of the table.
- Long or banquet table: a row of cylinder pendants, all set to the same tone.
- Dining nook next to an island: 8'' or 10'' ceiling lights above the island and the 20'' above the table, in the same finish.
4' linear suspended luminaire: the rectangular table, and its bidirectional version
Above a rectangular table, the 4' linear suspended luminaire follows the shape of the table and spreads light from end to end, without leaving the guests at either end in the shadows. It is centred along the table; for a longer table, two aligned fixtures extend the line of light. Hang it 30 to 36 inches above the surface: low enough to focus light on the plates, high enough not to hide the faces of the people sitting across.
The 4' bidirectional linear suspended luminaire sends light both toward the table and toward the ceiling. The indirect light bouncing off the ceiling lights the rest of the room and softens contrasts, which avoids the spotlight effect above the table in a dark room. For a round or square table, a centred fixture puts everyone on an equal footing. To keep good proportions, the fixture's diameter should be at least half the width of the table; a fixture that is too small looks lost above a large table.

For a long table or a more contemporary style, several cylinder pendants hung in a row create a rhythm above the table. Technical tips for LED dining room lighting
Measure the table before choosing the fixture. Length, width and shape decide the model; the ceiling height decides the length of the suspension.
Centre on the table, not the room. A pendant off by a few inches is noticed at every meal.
One tone across the whole row. With 3CCT models, set each cylinder to the same value before hanging them.
Dimmable bulbs in the E26 ceiling lights. A bulb-based fixture is only dimmable if the bulb and the dimmer both are.
The finish follows the kitchen hardware. Black with black handles, and the same finish above the island and the table.
