LED DINING ROOM LIGHTS

LED dining room lights are the ones that most directly set the mood of the home. A good plan showcases the food, flatters the guests and adapts to the occasion. The recipe comes in four layers: a dimmable pendant above the table, track spots for the sideboard and the artwork, recessed lights outside the table zone and accent strips in the furniture, all in 2700K or 3000K at CRI 90 and above. LEDCO supplies each of these layers.

LED dining room lights: the table first, the room second

A dining room is lit from the inside out: the table, then the walls and furniture, then the rest of the room. The four layers, in that order:

  • Above the table: the pendant, centred on the table and not on the room, dimmable.
  • On the walls and the sideboard: adjustable track spots for the artwork and the serving area.
  • In the ceiling, around: dimmable recessed lights for circulation, placed outside the table zone.
  • In the furniture: LED strips under the sideboard shelves, in a niche or behind a bulkhead.

Each layer has its own control. That is what lets you go from full homework light to the low light of a dinner with friends without changing a bulb.

The pendant above the table: height, size and tone

An LED pendant light centred above the table defines the convivial zone, focuses the light on the plates and becomes a decorative object in its own right. Three rules place it well: the bottom of the pendant about 30 to 34 inches above the table surface, a width of roughly half that of the table, and a warm white of 2700K or 3000K at CRI 90 and above so the food keeps its colours. The dimmer is essential: full power for festive meals, low light for ambiance. To choose the model according to the shape of the table, see our LED dining room lighting page.

LED track spotlights: light that follows the sideboard and the artwork

In a dining room with no outlet in the right place, or one open to the kitchen, an LED track spotlight system offers the most flexibility. Adjustable spots aim the light at the table, the sideboard, a piece of art or the serving area, and the track can be repositioned if the layout changes. At 3000K and CRI 90 and above, the spots showcase food textures and colours as well as a pendant does.

Dimmable LED recessed lights: general light, outside the table zone

Dimmable LED recessed lights, at 2700K or 3000K, provide the general light alongside the pendant or the spots; where the ceiling cannot be cut, integrated LED fixtures do the same job. Positioned outside the direct table zone, they avoid reflections in the tableware and light the circulation and serving areas. The combination of pendant, recessed lights and dimmer gives complete control of the mood for any occasion.

LED accent strips: sideboard, niche and ceiling bulkhead

LED strips in aluminum profiles, under the sideboard shelves, inside a wall niche or behind a ceiling bulkhead, enrich the room without overwhelming it. In 2700K, they stay within the same warm palette as the pendant. For built-in wine storage or a glass-front sideboard, a 4000K strip showcases bottles and tableware without distorting colours. The Custom Builder cuts the profile and the strip to the exact length of the shelf, and our LED lights for ceiling bulkheads page shows how to hide the line.

Dining room open to the kitchen or living room: one single tone

In an open area, the eye moves constantly from one zone to the next, and two different whites show immediately. Keep the same colour temperature on the table, in the living room and in the kitchen, and let the pendant mark the dining zone by its shape rather than its tone. Separate circuits then let you dim the table without turning off the rest.

Technical tips for LED dining room lights

Centre the pendant on the table, not the room. If the electrical outlet is off-centre, an offset plate or a track solves the problem.

Keep recessed lights away from above the guests. A recessed light over a head hollows the features and makes the tableware shine.

A dimmer compatible with the LED load. Check the dimmer's compatibility with the pendant or the power supply before buying.

Stay between 2700K and 3000K on the table. 4000K is reserved for the wine storage and display cabinets.

Strips always hide behind a lip. You see the light on the shelf, never the dots of the strip.

Dining room lighting FAQ

How high should the pendant hang above the table?

The bottom of the pendant sits about 30 to 34 inches above the table surface: low enough to focus the light on the plates, high enough not to hide the faces of the people sitting across. With a very high ceiling, you stay within that range and lengthen the rod or cable.

What size of pendant for my table?

About half the width of the table for a single fixture. Above a long table, a linear pendant or several small pendants in a row follow the shape better than one large fixture in the centre.

What colour temperature for LED dining room lights?

2700K or 3000K, with a CRI of 90 and above: that is the combination that flatters food and faces. 4000K is only used in wine storage or a glass-front sideboard, where you want to see the bottles and tableware as they are.

The recessed lights create reflections in the tableware: how do I avoid that?

By moving them out of the direct table zone: they light the circulation and the sideboard, and the pendant takes care of the table. If the recessed lights already exist above the table, a dimmer set low limits the reflections during the meal.

How do I light a dining room with no ceiling outlet in the right place?

A track fed from the existing outlet lets you slide the spots right above the table; strips in a bulkhead or a cove complete the light without cutting the ceiling. Contact LEDCO with the table dimensions, the ceiling height and a photo of the room: an advisor will propose the plan.
