The round #600R puck light and the square #600S puck light are the most popular for residential stairs: low profile, with light aimed at the step rather than at your eyes. Round for a classic style, square for a more current design: choose the shape that matches the lines of your staircase.
Closed stairs between two walls: the #975 LED wall brick light
When the staircase runs between two walls, with concrete steps or risers that are hard to reach, the lighting moves into the wall. The #975 LED brick wall light installs at step height and creates regular guidance lighting from one step to the next. It lights effectively without a high ceiling or a pendant; in warm white, it gives a closed stairwell the feel of a welcoming hallway rather than a service passage.
Floating or open stairs: strip in a profile under each step
A floating staircase, in wood or glass, lends itself to a continuous line of light. An LED strip set in an aluminum profile under the nosing of each step draws a band of light across the full width. Profiles #85 and #86 are common choices: the recessed #86 disappears into the structure and leaves only the light visible. For a non-standard step width, the custom builder cuts the profile and strip to the exact length.
Narrow or basement stairs: #200 puck light and slim downlights
On a narrow staircase, a compact landing or a basement stairway, you need effective light that doesn't get in the way. The #200 puck light, smaller, fits where a standard puck would be too large. On the ceiling, slim LED ceiling downlights, such as the 3- or 4-inch DLX, provide general light without needing much space above the drywall. It is often the most used staircase in the house, and the one with the least natural light.
Double-height stairwell: #700 puck light and trimless downlights
A double-height staircase or one with several landings needs more light, because the distance between the source and the step increases. The #700 puck light offers higher light output for this kind of staircase. On the stairwell ceiling, the 12 W DLT 4-inch trimless downlight lights the landing while blending into the drywall, and the 10 W-40 W commercial round downlight takes over under higher ceilings.
Handrail and stringer: a line that follows the whole climb
Integrating an LED strip into the handrail or along the stringer creates grazing light that follows the staircase all the way up. A profile with a frosted diffuser avoids visible hot spots and gives a uniform line, whether the railing is wood, aluminum or stainless steel. Add an LED dimmer: low light at night to move around without waking the house, full intensity when you have guests.
Technical tips for indoor stairs
Think of the person coming down. You walk down a staircase facing the fixtures: the source must be hidden or aimed at the step, never at the eyes.
Run the wires before closing the walls. A wall brick light or a puck light in the riser is planned before the drywall goes up; afterwards, it means more work.
The higher the stairwell, the more the source matters. A compact puck light is enough on a basement stairway, but a double-height stairwell calls for a more powerful model.
Match the white to the house. A warm white for a residential interior, a neutral white for a more contemporary décor.
