LED THEATER LIGHTS

Good home theater lighting, like that of a performance hall, has to know how to disappear. During the show or the screening, it guides movement in the dark without distracting anyone; before and after, it welcomes the audience and sets the tone for the evening. LEDCO brings together the components that turn a room, public or private, into a true performance space: LED strips in the steps, wall markers, dimmable RGBW downlights and bias lighting behind the screen, all driven by scenes.

Before, during, after: the three moments of a room

A room is not lit at a single level; each moment of the evening has its light, and that sequence guides the choice of fixtures:

  • Welcome: perimeter downlights at full output, room colour according to the event.
  • Blackout: steps and markers only, at low intensity.
  • Intermission or pause: downlights at mid-level, to move around without breaking the mood.
  • End: gradual return to full light.
  • Cleaning and other uses: clear light, no colour.

Tiered steps and aisles: LED strip in a profile

In a tiered hall or a raised seating area, step lighting provides safety without interrupting the show. An indoor LED strip set in an aluminum profile under each step nosing produces soft, floor-level light that guides footsteps without dazzling neighbouring spectators. During the screening, these strips stay at low intensity: visible enough to get around, discreet enough not to distract. For a long row of steps, the custom Configurator lets you order each profile at the exact length; installation details are on our indoor LED stair lights page.

Aisle markers: #975 LED wall brick and #2000 louver puck light

Along an aisle or in a side wall, low recessed fixtures mark the way. The #975 LED brick wall light integrates into the wall near the floor, and the #2000 louver LED puck light hides its source behind its louvered face, an asset in a dark room where an overly visible light point draws the eye. These marker fixtures complement the step strips and stay on at low intensity throughout the show.

Room ambiance: DLS 4" RGBW-CCT and DLF 4" RGBW downlights

Before the curtain rises, the colour of the room sets the tone. The DLS 4" round RGBW-CCT 9W LED recessed light moves from warm white to neutral white or to a colour, and the DLF 4" round slim RGBW 9W LED recessed light offers the same play of colours in a flat format. Red for an action film, deep blue for a thriller, purple for science fiction: a few presets change the atmosphere at the touch of a button. In a public hall, these downlights can also take on the colours of an event or a partner; to go further with colour, see our RGB LED lighting page.

General lighting: DLT trimless downlights, dimmable to 5-10%

A room also needs clear light outside of performances, for welcoming guests, cleaning or other uses. LED ceiling downlights installed around the perimeter provide this light, then dim to 5 to 10% during the show to leave only the ambiance. The DLT 4" round trimless 12W LED recessed light blends into the ceiling, which stays clean-looking when the lights are off. Choose compatible models and a compatible dimmer for smooth dimming, with no visible step.

Home theater: bias lighting at 6500 K and RGBW strips

In a home theater, bias lighting means placing an LED strip behind the television or projection screen, aimed at the wall. It softens the contrast between the bright image and the dark room, which reduces eye strain during long viewing sessions. Choose a colour temperature that matches the screen's white balance, typically 6500 K for a calibrated television. RGBW strips in coves, behind panels or under the seats add an indirect halo that changes with the mood; an aluminum profile on the back of the TV unit keeps the installation clean.

Credits, Screening, Pause and End scenes: dimmers and controllers

With Bluetooth or Wi-Fi LED dimmers and controllers, scenes such as Credits, Screening, Pause or End are triggered with a single press and synchronize the steps, the ambiance and the bias lighting in one action, from a phone or a remote. That is what separates a few installed strips from real home theater lighting: the sequence is ready before the audience arrives.

Technical tips for home theater lighting

Separate the markers from the general lighting. Steps and wall bricks stay on during the blackout, on their own circuit.

Hide every source. Strip under the step nosing, louvered puck, trimless downlight: in the dark, you should see the light, never the lamp.

Check the dimming all the way down. A downlight that cuts out at 10% instead of fading smoothly gets noticed; the fixture-dimmer pair is validated before ordering.

Match the bias lighting to the screen. A 6500 K strip behind a calibrated television; another shade distorts the colours of the image.

Program the scenes before opening night. Credits, Screening, Pause, End: four scenes are enough for most rooms.

The Odyscène performance hall is among our accomplishments. Contact our team to plan the number of downlights, the position of the strips and the integration of controllers based on the dimensions and layout of your room.

Home theater lighting and performance hall FAQ

What are the best ceiling lights for a home theater?

Dimmable downlights set around the perimeter, never above the screen: the DLT 4" trimless 12W for a clean ceiling, and the DLS 4" RGBW-CCT 9W or the DLF 4" RGBW 9W if you want to colour the room. The dimmer must be compatible to go down to 5-10%.

What is bias lighting?

An LED strip fixed behind the television or the screen, aimed at the wall, which creates a soft halo around the image. It reduces the contrast between the screen and the dark room, and therefore eye strain. It is chosen at 6500 K to respect the white balance of a calibrated television.

How do I light the steps without disturbing the audience?

With an LED strip in an aluminum profile under each step nosing, set to low intensity: the light falls at floor level and does not rise toward faces. The #975 wall bricks and the #2000 louver puck lights mark the aisles the same way.

Can the room colour change with the film or the event?

Yes, with RGBW-CCT downlights and RGBW strips: red, deep blue, purple or a partner's colours, saved as presets. The rest of the time, they give a warm or neutral white.

Can everything be controlled from one button?

Yes. A Bluetooth or Wi-Fi controller stores scenes that set the steps, the markers, the downlights and the bias lighting at the same time. One press on Screening, and the whole room switches to show mode.
