A shower light works in the toughest spot in the house: water spray, steam every single day and a ceiling nobody wants to open up again. Getting it right comes down to three decisions: an IP65 recessed fixture overhead, an IP67 strip in the niche and a transformer that always stays out of the water. IP65 or IP67 recessed fixture: the basic shower light

A waterproof recessed fixture remains the standard choice for a shower ceiling. What sets it apart from an ordinary pot light is its protection rating: an IP65 fixture withstands jets of water, an IP67 fixture handles immersion for a time. In our LED ceiling downlights, choose a model whose spec sheet shows IP65 or higher, sized to the cutout in your ceiling. That is what makes a good shower pot light.

One 10W to 15W fixture is enough for a standard 36×36-inch stall; plan two for a walk-in shower of 60×36 inches or larger. A 4-inch fixture in 3000K or 4000K, with a colour rendering index of 90 or higher, keeps skin looking natural and tiles true to colour. Outside the shower, the DLT 4" round trimless 12W recessed light keeps the rest of the ceiling clean.

LED strip in a waterproof profile: bench, cove and dropped ceiling

Along a bench or under a cove, LED strip, also called LED tape, draws a continuous line of light that a downlight cannot give. Inside the shower, it has to be waterproof, ideally IP67: it then withstands immersion in a metre of water for 30 minutes, far more than a shower will ever put it through.

Set in an aluminum profile with a milky diffuser, the strip is protected from knocks and gives a hotspot-free line that suits ceramic tile and marble. Choose it from our indoor LED strips, checking the IP rating on the spec sheet, or from our outdoor LED strips, made for water. A lit shower niche: which white, which density

A lit niche is one of the most frequent requests in high-end Quebec bathrooms. A 15 to 30 cm strip inside the niche creates a halo around the bottles and turns storage into an architectural detail. Choose a high-density strip, 120 LEDs per metre at minimum, to avoid visible dots on the tiled walls. On marble or natural stone, 2700K warm white brings out the veining. Opposite the shower, a backlit LED mirror completes the spa feel.

Where to put shower lighting, from a stall to a walk-in

A well-lit shower combines general light and accent light. The spots that work:

• On the ceiling: one or two waterproof recessed fixtures, so you can wash without shadows.
• In the niche: an IP67 strip hidden under the top edge, lighting the bottles without glare.
• Under the bench: a line in a profile that guides your step and makes the bench float.
• In a cove: indirect light that softens the whole enclosure.

In an open walk-in shower, the light spills into the room: keep the same white as the rest of the bathroom.

Transformer, dimmer and GFCI: what stays out of the water

Low-voltage strips and downlights run on a 12V or 24V transformer, which never goes in the wet zone or in a junction box exposed to steam. Our dimmable LED power supplies let you dim the shower in the evening. The dimmer follows the same rule: CSA-certified and approved for damp locations, or installed outside the wet zone. Your electrician also provides the GFCI protection required near a shower.

Technical tips for lighting a shower

IP65 overhead, IP67 in the niche. The ceiling fixture gets steam; the niche strip can take the spray head-on.

Two whites, two jobs. On the ceiling, 3000K or 4000K for getting ready; in the niche, 2700K or 3000K for a spa mood.

The transformer stays dry. Install it outside the shower, somewhere accessible, never in a damp junction box.

A certified dimmer, or none. Cheap uncertified dimmers make LED strips flicker and tire the eyes.

Can I put LED lights in my shower?

Yes, as long as the products are waterproof and the transformer stays dry. On the ceiling, an IP65 or IP67 recessed fixture; in a niche or under a bench, an IP67 strip in a profile. Everything runs on low voltage and is connected by an electrician.

Which can light should I use in a shower ceiling?

A 4-inch recessed fixture, IP65 at minimum, in 3000K or 4000K, with a colour rendering index of 90 or higher. A standard stall needs one; a larger walk-in shower, two. Check the IP rating on the model's spec sheet, or ask us which one fits your ceiling.

I want a niche with built-in lighting: what precautions should I take in a tiled shower?

Plan an IP67 strip, in a profile or under the edge of the niche, and route the wire before the membrane and tile go in. The wire runs to a transformer installed somewhere dry, outside the shower. Your electrician then checks the connection and the GFCI protection.

What lighting works for a walk-in shower?

Plan two waterproof recessed fixtures on the ceiling, then a line of strip in a profile to highlight the bench or the niche: that is what creates the spa effect. A walk-in shower light should match the white of the rest of the bathroom, since nothing separates the two spaces.

Can an ordinary LED strip go in a shower?

No. An unprotected indoor strip resists neither water nor steam, and it fails quickly. You need waterproof lights for the shower: a strip rated IP65 at minimum and IP67 near the water, set in an aluminum profile with a diffuser.
