LED DECK LIGHTING

Good covered deck lighting comes mostly from above and from the walls: the roof, the beams, the façade and the doors provide the mounting points. Whether it is a backyard, a rooftop terrace or a restaurant patio, the light has to stand up to rain, humidity and freeze-thaw cycles, while making people want to stay after sunset. LEDCO supplies the string lights, recessed lights, wall packs, floodlights and outdoor strips for lighting built in three layers, with an IP65 rating wherever rain can reach the fixture.

Three layers of light, three different jobs

On a deck or patio, no single type of fixture does everything. Instead, you stack three layers, each with its own job:

  • Ambiance: string lights or a line of strip that set the mood above the tables.
  • Passage: a wall pack at every door, so people can move around and leave safely.
  • General lighting: recessed or ceiling lights under the roof, or floodlights over a large area.

Each layer is controlled separately: general lighting for serving or tidying up, ambiance alone for the end of the evening. That is what separates well-planned LED deck lighting from a single ceiling fixture that dazzles everyone.

Permanent string lights above the tables

Strung along the roofline or between two structures, permanent string lights instantly set the tone for a restaurant patio or a welcoming backyard. Designed to stay installed, they spare you from bringing out seasonal string lights every spring. A warm white blends with wood and natural materials.

LED recessed and ceiling lights under the roof

Under a solid roof, a closed pergola or an upper-floor balcony, LED recessed lights provide recessed deck lighting without cluttering the ceiling. Lay them out in a uniform grid, spaced 4 to 6 feet apart, to avoid dark areas between the tables. Where recessing is impossible, surface-mounted LED ceiling lights make good deck ceiling lights and do the same job. Even when sheltered from direct rain, the ceiling remains exposed to humidity: check on the spec sheet that the model is rated for outdoor or damp locations.

Doorway LED wall pack at the deck door

The door leading from the house or the dining room to the deck is a passage that must be well lit. The 9W-12W-15W doorway LED wall pack mounts above the door and lights the threshold and the first steps; the 20W-25W-30W model suits a wider door or a taller wall. For a commercial patio, the LED wall pack range extends to higher-wattage standard and adjustable models.

In the city, close to neighbours, the 25W-40W-60W full cut-off LED wall pack directs light toward the ground rather than into the windows across the way. For a corner far from any wiring, the 15W solar LED wall pack installs without trenching. As with any outdoor fixture, favour a die-cast aluminum housing, which stands up to freeze-thaw cycles better than plastic.

LED floodlights for a rooftop terrace or a large yard

On a rooftop terrace or a large open deck, adjustable outdoor LED floodlights light a specific area from the façade: an outdoor bar, a lounge corner, a hedge or a tree that serves as a backdrop. Mounted high and carefully aimed, they add depth without dazzling seated guests.

Outdoor LED strip in a profile along the beams

A line of light along a beam, under the roof edge or above an outdoor bar counter gives the deck an architectural finish. Choose a waterproof outdoor LED strip: indoor strips, rated IP22, stay indoors, even under a roof. Housed in an aluminum profile, the strip is protected, its heat is better dissipated and the light source disappears from view. With the custom LED designer, the strip is prepared to the exact length of each beam.

Dimmers and controllers: from dinner to closing time

A deck doesn't need the same light at dinner as at closing time. With LED dimmers and controllers, general lighting dims as the evening goes on, while the string lights and strips take over. In 3000K warm white, the whole setup blends naturally with wood, composite and stone, without feeling clinical.

Technical tips for covered deck lighting

Aim for IP65 near the edges. The edge of a roof takes wind-driven rain; the middle of the ceiling needs at least a damp-location model.

Light the table, not the eyes. Recessed lights in the ceiling, floodlights aimed downward: no light source should be visible from a chair.

One circuit per layer. Ambiance, general lighting and doors on separate controls, so you can set each moment of the evening.

Think of the neighbours. A full cut-off wall pack and floodlights aimed at the ground keep the light on your deck.

Plan the wiring before the finish. Electrical boxes and wire runs are decided before the deck ceiling is closed in.

To design the lighting for your covered deck or patio, residential or commercial, send us a sketch with the dimensions, the roof height and the location of outlets and electrical boxes. Contact LEDCO: an advisor will help you choose the right fixtures for each layer.

Covered Deck Lighting FAQ

What IP rating do I need under a covered deck?

Even when sheltered from direct rain, humid air and wind-driven rain reach the ceiling. Choose fixtures rated for outdoor or damp locations, and aim for IP65 near the edges, where water can reach the fixture. An IP22 indoor strip has no place outdoors, even under cover.

Can I install an LED strip under a deck roof?

Yes, as long as you choose a waterproof outdoor LED strip and house it in an aluminum profile. The profile protects the strip, dissipates its heat and hides the light source. The custom LED designer prepares it to the length of each beam, with no cutting on site.

How do I light a restaurant patio without dazzling customers?

Stack the layers: string lights above the tables for ambiance, recessed lights in the ceiling for service, wall packs at the doors. Keep every light source out of the line of sight of seated guests, and dim the general lighting as the evening goes on.

How far apart should recessed lights be on a deck ceiling?

A uniform grid, with 4 to 6 feet between recessed lights, avoids dark areas between the tables. Where recessing is impossible, surface-mounted LED ceiling lights follow the same grid logic.

How do I light a corner of the deck without electrical wiring?

A solar fixture avoids trenching and wiring. The 15W solar LED wall pack and the 20W mini solar wall pack mount on the wall and charge during the day. Place the panel where it gets sun, away from the shadow of the roof.
