LED MOTION SENSOR LIGHT

An LED motion sensor light comes on when someone arrives and goes off when they leave: no switch to hunt for in the dark, no fixture burning all night for nothing. The right question is not "which fixture" but "which sensor with which fixture". LEDCO supplies both: Bluetooth PIR and microwave sensors for ceilings and high bays, a 12 V-24 V door opening detector for cabinets, and the wall packs and floodlights they control outside.

LED motion sensor light: which sensor for which fixture

A sensor is not a fixture: it is the part that controls it. The catalogue has five, each for one situation:

  • Ceiling Bluetooth PIR sensor 120-347 V: it mounts on the ceiling of a garage, a corridor or a warehouse and controls the fixtures on the circuit, on/off or in a dimming version.
  • Bluetooth PIR sensor for LED high bays: it mounts directly on a high bay and lights only the occupied aisle.
  • Microwave sensor for LED high bays: another detection technology, adjusted with its dedicated remote.
  • Door opening detector 12 V-24 V: in a cabinet or a closet, it turns the puck lights or the strip on when the door opens.
  • Photocell 120 V: not a motion sensor, but an eye that switches on at dark; the two are often combined.

LED wall packs and a sensor: the building perimeter

On the outside walls of a commercial or industrial building, LED wall packs provide the perimeter security lighting. The standard LED wall pack 30W-40W-50W-60W covers a facade or a dock, the 75W-90W-105W-120W model larger areas. Controlled by a sensor or a photocell depending on the location, the wall pack only works when it has to; we confirm the combination with you for each model. For an example, a commercial installation with a 120 W wall pack is among our accomplishments.

LED floodlights from 30 W to 150 W controlled by a sensor: yard, entrance, parking

For a backyard, a garage entrance or a corner of a parking lot, the floodlight concentrates the light where the wall pack spreads it. The LED floodlight 30W-50W-60W is enough for a residential entrance, the LED floodlight 70W-100W-150W for a yard or a small parking area; the full range is in outdoor LED floodlights. For a large lot, our LED parking lot lighting page covers pole-mounted fixtures.

Garage, warehouse and basement: the ceiling sensor and the high bay sensor

Indoors, the logic is the same, with two sensors depending on the height. In a double garage, a corridor or a basement, the ceiling Bluetooth PIR sensor 120-347 V controls the fixtures in the room from a single point (see our LED garage lights page). In a warehouse or a workshop with a high ceiling, the Bluetooth PIR sensor and the microwave sensor mount on the fixtures in the LED high bays category: each aisle lights up when a forklift enters and comes back down when it leaves.

Steps, closets and cabinets: the small low-voltage sensors

Not everything happens on the ceiling. Outside, the 3 W LED stair light with motion detector, from the LED landscaping category, lights a porch step as you pass. Inside, the 12 V-24 V door opening detector from the accessories and connectors category turns on the puck lights in a cabinet or the strip in a closet as soon as the door opens, and off when it closes. Both connect to the same 12 V or 24 V LED power supply as the rest of the installation.

Photocell 120 V and sensor: one switches on at dark, the other as you pass

The two are often confused. The photocell switches the fixture on at dusk and off at dawn, every day, regardless of who passes: it is the right choice for an entrance you want lit all night. The motion sensor only switches on as someone passes and for the set time: it is the right choice for a yard, a parking lot or a little-used corridor.

Adjusting a sensor: sensitivity, delay and light threshold

Three settings come up on most models: sensitivity, which limits the detection zone to avoid cars on the street; the delay before switching off, short for a passage and longer for a place where people linger; and the light threshold, which keeps the sensor from working in broad daylight. On the Bluetooth sensors, these settings are made wirelessly, without climbing a ladder.

Technical tips for LED motion sensor lighting

Confirm the sensor-and-fixture pair before buying. Voltage, dimming type and controlled load have to match; it is a check we do with you on each model's data sheet.

Keep the sensor away from heat sources. A PIR reacts to moving heat; a dryer vent, an air conditioner or a chimney make it trigger for nothing.

One sensor per zone. Each aisle or each room lights up according to its own occupancy; that is where the saving is made.

The delay follows the use of the place. Short for a passage, longer for a yard where people work; a delay that is too short makes the yard blink while you load the car.

Outside, a photocell on top of the sensor. It blocks daytime triggers and lets the sensor work only at night.

LED motion sensor light FAQ

Which LED motion sensor light for a garage entrance?

An LED floodlight 30W-50W-60W or a doorway wall pack on the facade, controlled by a sensor, with a photocell so it only works at night. The delay is set short: the time to get out of the car and go in.

Can the sensor dim the light instead of switching it off?

Yes, with the dimming version of the ceiling Bluetooth PIR sensor, or with the high bay sensors: the light drops to a standby level when the zone empties and comes back up as you pass. It is the answer for corridors and covered parking, where you never want complete darkness.

How do I avoid triggers from animals and cars?

By lowering the sensitivity to shrink the detection zone, and by aiming the sensor at the entrance rather than the street. Keep it away from hot-air outlets too.

Can I add a sensor to a fixture that is already installed?

Often, yes. A ceiling sensor 120-347 V goes on the circuit of an existing fixture, tube, shop light or panel, and controls it on/off. Give us the model of the fixture: we confirm compatibility and the load the sensor can control.

Which sensor for a closet or a cabinet?

The 12 V-24 V door opening detector. It connects between the power supply and the puck lights or the strip, switches on when the door opens and off when it closes. No delay to set, and the light never stays on by mistake.
