Well-designed LED landscape lighting turns an ordinary yard into a spectacular nighttime setting while increasing safety and property value. The key is layering lighting techniques that highlight vegetation, pathways, and architecture without creating light pollution.
12V Path Lights — Safe Walkway Guidance
Low-voltage 12V path fixtures are the backbone of any landscape lighting system. Outdoor LED path lights stake directly into the ground along walkways, visually defining the route without high-voltage wiring. A 5 to 8-watt model per fixture is sufficient for residential pathways. Brass or anodized aluminum finishes resist oxidation for decades. Space them 6 to 10 feet apart for visual continuity without washing out the pathway.
Spotlights — Highlighting Trees and Architectural Features
The uplighting technique — a ground-mounted spotlight aimed upward — turns a mature tree or sculpted hedge into a luminous sculpture. LED wall washers in a ground-mount configuration create the same effect on masonry walls or ornamental fences. Try moonlighting for a natural look: mount a spotlight high in a tree's branches pointing downward, mimicking moonlight filtered through foliage. This approach casts organic shadows on the ground.
Wash Lights — Illuminating Your Home's Facade
Facade lighting using LED wall packs or ground-mounted spotlights aimed upward reveals the texture of brick, stone, or siding as soon as night falls. This technique significantly boosts the curb appeal of the property. Position spotlights 18 to 24 inches from the facade for a grazing angle that accentuates surface relief. A 3000K (warm white) colour temperature flatters virtually all building materials.
12V Plug-and-Play Transformer — Simple Installation
The heart of a low-voltage landscape system is the LED dimmable transformer. A 150 to 300-watt model is sufficient to power 10 to 30 garden fixtures. The 12V output is safe for DIY installation — no electrician's permit required for low-voltage circuits. Choose a model with a built-in timer or smartphone connectivity. Install it sheltered from direct rain, ideally under an eave or in a weatherproof enclosure. IP67-rated LED strips can also be integrated into the 12V system for creative applications along garden bed borders.

- Transformer sizing: add 25 % capacity margin above total load for longevity
