LED KITCHEN COUNTER LIGHTS
The right kitchen counter lights depend first on what sits above the work surface. Not every counter has a row of cabinets: there is the island, the breakfast bar, open shelving and the coffee corner, where you chop, prepare, serve and, quite often, sit down to eat. LEDCO offers LED strips, custom-cut aluminum profiles and LED puck lights to light each section of the counter according to what is above it.
Kitchen counter lights: four situations, four answers
Before choosing a product, look at what is above each stretch of counter. That surface, or the lack of one, decides the fixture:
- A floating shelf or a bulkhead: a profile recessed into the underside of the unit gives an integrated line of light.
- The breakfast bar overhang: a strip in a profile, mounted underneath, draws soft indirect light.
- Open shelving: puck lights recessed into the shelf light both the counter and what is on display.
- A coffee corner or a bar: a few puck lights cast decorative circles of light.
For the island surface itself, light comes from the ceiling. LED pendant fixtures or downlights aligned with the counter then complement the strip along the edge.
Under a floating shelf: the #86 recessed profile
A low-profile recessed aluminum profile, such as the #86, fits under the bottom of a floating shelf, a bulkhead or a cabinet and sits flush with the furniture. Its matte diffuser cover produces soft, even light across the whole counter: no visible hot spots, no exposed strip. The result looks like a high-end integrated fixture.
The strip slides into the profile and connects at the end with a discreet connector. When the counter is split into several sections, the profiles link in cascade with short connection cables. With the custom Configurator, each section is ordered at the exact length of the unit, whether 87 cm, 112 cm or 143 cm, with no cutting on site.
Breakfast bar and island: a line under the edge
An island has no cabinet above it, but its edge offers a great lighting opportunity. An indoor LED strip set in a profile under the breakfast bar overhang, or along the base of the cabinets as toe-kick lighting, draws a line of indirect light. This under counter lighting visually lightens the unit and doubles as a night light.
Density matters here as much as anywhere, because the edge is seen up close. A 60 LED per metre strip shows visible light points, while a high-density strip of 120 to 240 LEDs per metre gives a perfectly continuous line.
Open shelving and display cabinets: the recessed #2000 puck light
Above a counter topped with open shelving, #2000 series puck lights recess into the shelves. They light both the work surface and what is on display: dishes, bottles, decorative objects. Available as the #2000 round puck light, as a square version and in several other variations, the series has a compact format and an aluminum housing that blends into floating shelves and glass-front cabinets alike.
Coffee corner and secondary counters: the #600R and #600S puck lights
On a short counter, a coffee corner or a bar, a few LED counter lights are sometimes better than a continuous line. The #600R, round, and #600S, square, puck lights cast regular circles of light on the surface. This decorative effect highlights the coffee machine, a serving board or a plant; the full selection is in our decorative LED puck lights.
Surface mounting: the profile, the cable and a hidden power supply
When you would rather not cut a groove, a surface-mount aluminum profile screws or sticks directly under the unit. Installation stays within reach of any DIYer: a few holes for the mounting clips, a low-voltage 12 V or 24 V cable running to the LED power supply hidden in a cabinet or under the sink, then connecting the profiles in cascade.
Technical tips for kitchen counter lighting
Stay at 3000 K on the counter. This warm white, slightly crisper than 2700 K, enhances food and materials such as wood, quartz, granite or polished concrete.
Follow the rest of the kitchen. If the whole room is lit at 4000 K, choose 4000 K for the counter too, to keep a consistent white from one fixture to the next.
Go high-density on a visible edge. Under an overhang seen up close, a strip with 120 to 240 LEDs per metre avoids the string-of-dots effect.
One measurement per counter section. An island, a shelf and a coffee corner rarely share the same length; each gets its own profile, cut to size.
Plan where the power supply goes. A nearby cabinet or the space under the sink works well, as long as the cable is run there before the profiles are mounted.

Kitchen Counter Lights FAQ
Which kitchen counter lights work for an island with no cabinets above?
For the surface, light comes from the ceiling: pendant fixtures or downlights aligned with the island. For the edge, an LED strip in a profile under the breakfast bar overhang adds an indirect line that also serves as a night light. The two complement each other very well.
Can a counter under open shelving be lit?
Yes, by recessing #2000 series puck lights into the bottom shelf. They light the work surface and showcase the dishes or bottles on the shelves. Their compact aluminum housing stays discreet, even on a floating shelf.
Do I need to cut a groove for kitchen countertop lighting under a shelf?
Only if you want a recessed profile, which sits flush with the underside of the unit. A surface-mount profile screws or sticks on directly, with no machining. The first looks like an integrated fixture; the second is easier to install in a kitchen that is already finished.
Do you have photos of counters lit by LEDCO?
Yes: our accomplishments include a kitchen fitted with the recessed #86 profile. If you are planning a project, send us a sketch of your counter with its lengths. We will tell you which product suits each section.
