LED LIGHTS FOR CEILING BULKHEADS LÉVIS

The ceiling bulkhead — also called a ceiling soffit, dropped ceiling box or ceiling casing — is a very common architectural element in open-concept kitchens, hallways, dining rooms and contemporary residential entries. This architectural volume delineates zones in an open space, conceals plumbing and ventilation ducts, and can accommodate strategic lighting elements that transform the space. Well lit, the ceiling bulkhead becomes a strong design element that defines spatial zones, creates depth and adds a luminous dimension to the interior architecture. LEDCO offers LED solutions suited to ceiling bulkheads — integrated downlights, aluminum profiles for indirect lighting and LED strips within the cove.

LED downlights in the bulkhead's lower face

In the lower face (soffit) of a kitchen or entry bulkhead, small-diameter LED downlights — 2" to 4" — create a regular row of light points that illuminate the work surface below or light up a hallway passage. These miniature downlights integrate into the limited bulkhead depth (often 10–20 cm) without their ceiling boxes extending into the casing structure. Available in dimmable versions at 3000K–4000K depending on use (kitchen vs living space), they connect to the kitchen's existing electrical circuit without major work. For bulkheads above a kitchen island, a row of 3" downlights spaced 40–50cm apart creates targeted countertop lighting at 300–400 lux — sufficient for meal preparation. Combined with the main ceiling downlights illuminating the circulation zone, this double lighting layer visually differentiates the island from the rest of the kitchen and gives it its architectural identity.

LED aluminum profiles on the bulkhead's vertical face

On the bulkhead's inward-facing vertical surface — the part facing the room — an LED aluminum profile diffuses soft downward light that illuminates the top of kitchen cabinets, artwork hung above a sideboard or the wall texture of a hallway. This type of lighting, invisible from the front (the profile is hidden in the bulkhead return), creates a floating light effect strongly associated with high-end interior architecture. The vertical face of a 30cm bulkhead can accommodate a 10mm slim aluminum profile routed into the casing body to show only the line of light. In neutral white 3500–4000K at full power, this profile illuminates the zone immediately below the bulkhead with directional, precise light. In warm white 2700–3000K at 30–50% in ambiance mode, it creates accent lighting that defines the bulkhead as an architectural element in its own right.

LED strip in cove for indirect bulkhead lighting

An LED strip in a cove at the top of the bulkhead — in the angle between the vertical face and the main ceiling — projects light toward the ceiling, creating warm, even indirect lighting that bathes the entire room in diffuse light with no visible source. This "light from nowhere" effect is highly prized in contemporary interiors — in living rooms, master bedrooms and wide hallways. In warm white 2700K or 3000K, this indirect lighting complements the room's other downlights to create layered lighting that adds depth to the space. The soffit cove must be deep enough (at least 5cm) and oriented so the strip and profile are not visible from the floor, while allowing light to project toward the ceiling. For newly built bulkheads, LEDCO recommends planning the cove at the construction phase — renovation modification is possible but more complex.
