LED BOOKCASE LIGHTS

Well-placed bookshelf lights turn a storage unit into a display case: every shelf becomes a showcase where books, collectibles, plants and photos stand out in soft, continuous light. LEDCO offers custom solutions: LED strips in aluminum profiles cut to the width of each shelf, LED puck lights recessed into the back panel, RGB for different moods, and everything you need to switch, dim or control the whole bookcase.

LED strip under each shelf, in a profile

The most elegant solution is to slide an LED strip into a frosted diffuser aluminum profile mounted under the front edge of each shelf. The light falls onto the objects on the shelf below, with no glare and no visible LED dots. In 2700K or 3000K, it creates a warm atmosphere that turns the wall of books into a major decorative feature of the living room or the office.

The front edge matters: a profile set against the back mostly lights the wall, while a profile at the front lights the book spines and the objects. Each profile is cut to the exact width of the shelf, with no joints and no cutting on site.

LED puck lights in the back panel: a glow behind the books

For a bookcase with a solid back, in wood, MDF or plywood, LED puck lights recessed into the back panel create a glow that seems to come from behind the rows of books. It is the backlit effect seen in design bookcases. The round #600R LED puck light or the square #600S, in 2700K, give a soft, warm halo. Combined with the strips under the shelves, they form two layers of light that give the unit real depth.

Built-in bookcases: invisible integration

In a bookcase built into the wall, the lighting can disappear completely: cables hidden in the structure, power supply in the partition, controller tucked into a service niche. Profiles recessed into shelf grooves or side uprights give light that looks like part of the furniture, with no visible LED hardware. A single 24V transformer can power every shelf through low-voltage wires running inside the uprights. It is the most integrated form of bookcase lighting, best planned with the cabinetmaker before the finish.

Shelf lighting: wall shelves too

Everything that works for a bookcase works for wall shelves too, open or floating, in a living room or an office. The profile mounts under the front edge of each shelf, and the wire runs up inside the wall or along a moulding to the transformer. On an open shelf with no back or uprights, the light falls on the objects and also draws a line of light on the wall, which shows off a collection or a row of plants.

These are often the easiest bookshelf lights to add after the fact: no furniture to take apart, just profiles to screw in place and a transformer to hide in a nearby cabinet.

RGB to change the mood

RGB LED strips in a bookcase change the feel of the living room with the occasion: warm white for reading, midnight blue for a movie, a bright colour for a party. The R24 RGBW remote and receiver kit controls up to 4 zones, for example the shelves on one side and the back panel on the other. It is a popular option in studios, gaming corners and contemporary living rooms.

Switching the bookcase: the control options

A lit bookcase is controlled the way you want to use it. Our LED dimmers and controllers cover every case:

  • A simple switch: the 12/24V white touch switch mounts on the furniture itself.
  • A dimmer: the 9-24V LED roller dimmer sets the intensity, from full light to night light.
  • A remote: the R21 4-zone kit switches and dims without getting up.
  • A phone: the WiFi bridge receiver controls the lighting remotely.
  • A sensor: the 12-24V movement detector turns the shelves on as you approach.

Profiles cut to the width of your shelves

The easiest way to order is our custom design tool: you enter the width of each shelf, and our shop cuts the profile and strip to the right length through our custom manufacturing. The tool takes no payment and sends you a detailed quote. A wall niche to light near the bookcase? See our LED wall niche lights.

Technical tips for bookshelf lights

Mount the profile at the front edge. That is where it lights the books and objects, rather than the back of the shelf.

Stay with warm white. 2700K or 3000K brings out wood and book covers; keep RGB for effects.

Aim for a CRI of 90 or more. With good colour rendering, objects and covers stay true to life.

One transformer, properly sized. A 24V transformer chosen for the total load powers every shelf.

Run the wires through the uprights. In a built-in bookcase, plan their route before the finish so nothing shows.

Bookcase Lighting FAQ

How do you light a bookcase?

In two layers: an LED strip in a profile under the front edge of each shelf, then, if the back is solid, recessed LED puck lights for a glow behind the books. In 2700K or 3000K, the whole unit stays warm, and a dimmer takes you from reading light to ambiance.

Are there wireless bookshelf lights?

Our solutions run on a low-voltage transformer, discreet and hidden in the furniture or the wall. What is wireless is the control: an R21 remote, a wall controller or the WiFi bridge receiver means no switch to wire.

Can I light existing shelves?

Yes. A surface profile mounts under the front edge of each shelf, and the wires run along the uprights to the transformer. Puck lights, on the other hand, need a solid back to recess into.

What colour of light suits a bookcase?

A warm white of 2700K or 3000K, with a colour rendering index of 90 or more, for true-to-life covers and objects. RGB can be added for special evenings, without replacing the everyday white.

Do bookshelf lights need one transformer per shelf?

No. A single 24V transformer, chosen for the total load, powers the whole bookcase. To size your bookcase lighting, contact LEDCO with the number and width of the shelves.
