LED WALL NICHE LIGHTS

Good niche lighting turns a simple recess into a focal point: a sculpture, a vase, a plant or a row of books gains depth, and the hallway, entry or living room gains character. The right choice depends on the depth of the niche and the effect you want. LEDCO offers three approaches: the recessed #86 profile for even light, LED puck lights for a beam on the object, and strip or flex neon for a glowing outline.

The recessed #86 profile: a niche that glows from within

The #86 aluminum profile is the most elegant solution for a wall niche. It recesses flush into the back or along the sides of the niche, fully integrated with the surface. Its frosted opal diffuser hides the LED strip: the light seems to come straight out of the wall, with no visible hot spots and no exposed wiring. In 2700K or 3000K, it shows off objects with warmth; in CCT, it adapts the mood to the time of day.

If the niche already exists and can't be grooved, the #86 can also be surface-mounted. The profile and strip are cut to the exact dimensions of your niche through our custom manufacturing. The easiest way to order them is the custom design tool: you enter your lengths and receive a detailed quote, with no online payment.

LED puck lights: a beam on the displayed object

For light aimed at what sits in the niche, such as a statue, a vase or a candle, LED puck lights recessed into the niche ceiling produce a concentrated downward beam. They blend discreetly into a drywall, ceramic or wood niche. The round #600R LED puck light or its square #600S version matches the shape of the niche. Choose 2700K or 3000K, with a colour rendering index of 90 or more, to reproduce colours and textures faithfully. In a wide niche displaying two objects, two spaced puck lights work better than a single one in the centre.

LED strip outline: when the niche itself is the decor

An LED strip running around the perimeter of the niche, along all four inside edges, in an aluminum profile, creates indirect light that fills the whole volume. It is ideal for a niche with no particular object to highlight, where the architectural shape itself is the decorative element. In RGB, all four sides can change colour for the holidays or with the seasons.

Flex neon: for rounded niches

An arched niche or one with rounded corners doesn't suit a straight profile. Flex neon LED takes over: its flexibility lets it follow the curve with no visible seam. The very thin 3x6mm side-bend flex neon hugs the outline of an arch, while the 10x10mm recessed flex neon sits in a groove for a crisp line of light.

Where to place niche lights, room by room

The same niche is not lit the same way in an entrance and in a bedroom. A few guidelines:

  • Entrance and hallway: a #86 profile at the back of the niche gives a soft visual landmark, pleasant at night.
  • Living room: puck lights in the niche ceiling put a piece of art or a collection in the spotlight.
  • Bedroom: a niche behind the bed, outlined in warm white, becomes a decorative night light.
  • Bathroom, outside the shower: an IP65 profile or puck lights, sheltered from direct spray.

The bathroom niche: the right moisture rating

For bathroom niche lighting outside the shower, aim for IP44 at a minimum and IP65 if the niche can get splashed. An IP65 strip in an aluminum profile and IP65 puck lights suit this zone. In 3000K, the light matches a spa ambiance; in 2700K, it gives a candle-like effect in a bathtub niche. Inside the shower itself, you need an assembly made for direct water: see our LED shower niche lights page.

Technical tips for wall niche lighting

Even or directed: decide first. The #86 profile at the back lights the whole niche; puck lights in the ceiling light the object.

Hide the transformer. A 12V or 24V model tucks into the wall or the adjacent cabinet, and only the low-voltage wire reaches the niche.

Choose the white for the object. 2700K for a warm ambiance, 3000K to showcase objects, RGB for effects.

A deep niche loves a puck light. The deeper the niche, the more a beam focused on a single object makes an impact.

Outside the shower, IP44; splashes, IP65. Inside the shower, move up to an assembly designed for direct water.

Wall Niche Lights FAQ

What are the lights in a wall niche called?

When the strip sits in an aluminum profile with a diffuser, like the recessed #86, it is called a profile light. The small round or square fixtures in the niche ceiling are LED puck lights. For a curved niche, flex neon is used: a flexible strip that gives a continuous line of light.

Profile or puck lights: which niche lighting should I choose?

The #86 profile if you want the whole niche to glow evenly. Puck lights if one specific object should stand out, especially in a deep niche. The two combine very well: a profile at the back, a puck light in the ceiling.

Can a bathroom wall niche be lit?

Yes. Outside the shower, aim for IP44 at a minimum, and IP65 if the niche gets splashed. Inside the shower, the niche needs an assembly designed for direct water, presented on our shower niche page.

Where do I hide the transformer for niche lighting?

In the wall or in an adjacent cabinet. The strips and profiles run on 12V or 24V, and only the low-voltage wire reaches the niche, which keeps the installation invisible.

What does a lit wall niche look like?

With the #86 profile, like a wall that glows softly, with no visible hot spot. With puck lights, like an object staged by a beam from above. Send us a photo and the dimensions of your niche, and a LEDCO advisor will tell you which solution fits.

Should the lighting be planned before the niche is built?

Ideally, yes: for a recessed #86, the groove and the wire route are planned before the wall is finished. For an existing niche, the #86 surface-mounts and puck lights recess into the niche ceiling. Either way, our shop cuts the profile to your measurements.
