Outdoor LED strip lighting opens infinite decorative and functional lighting possibilities for residential and commercial exterior spaces. Under a terrace railing, in the steps of an outdoor staircase, around a pool, under eaves or in landscaping hedges, weatherproof LED strip transforms exteriors into elaborate light environments once thought reserved for architect-designed projects. IP65 vs IP67: which protection for which use?
The distinction between IP65 and IP67 is often misunderstood. An IP65 strip has a silicone coating on its top face protecting it against directional water jets and splashes — ideal for covered terraces, house fascias, under-stair soffits and raised planters. An IP67 strip is fully encapsulated in a silicone or resin sleeve protecting against temporary immersion (30 minutes at 1 meter depth) — required for at-grade applications susceptible to flooding, pool edges, garden pathways and decorative fountains. In Quebec, the winter freeze-thaw cycle is particularly demanding for outdoor LED strips. A quality IP65 strip made with a thick copper flexible PCB substrate and UV-resistant silicone coating withstands thermal cycles from -30°C to +60°C without coating cracking or component delamination.
Common residential applications
Under balcony railings and guard rail bottom rails, IP65 LED strip discreetly illuminates the terrace floor and creates a "floating deck" effect very popular in contemporary residential architecture. A 24V warm white 3000K, 10W/m strip installed in an exterior aluminum channel under the railing's bottom rail diffuses soft downward light without glare — sufficient for safe movement without lighting up the entire neighborhood. In outdoor staircases in wood, concrete or aluminum, an IP65 LED strip clipped into an aluminum profile recessed into the riser or fixed under the nosing creates elegant safety lighting that advantageously replaces small garden bollard lights. In RGB or RGBW, these strips can change color by season or event — red and green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, blue for Canada Day.
Pool and outdoor spa lighting
For pool edges and surrounding areas, IP67 RGBW LED strip creates changing, colorful light environments directly at the water's edge. Installed in a waterproof aluminum profile fixed under the coping or in a return water niche, it creates a light halo on the water surface that is particularly spectacular at night. For outdoor spas and hot tubs, IP67 warm white 2700K strip installed under the perimeter cover complements the spa's internal lighting and defines the relaxation zone.
