LED HANDRAIL LIGHTS
A handrail LED strip guides the eye from the first step to the last landing, makes the staircase safer in the dark and gives it a distinctive architectural effect. The principle is simple: an LED strip in an aluminum profile with a frosted diffuser, mounted under the handrail or recessed into a groove. A 2700 K or 3000 K white for warmth, a 12 V or 24 V supply depending on the length. LEDCO supplies strip, profile, flex neon and power supply, indoors and out.
Strip in a profile: the most common handrail LED strip setup
The most common solution is to set an LED strip in a frosted diffuser aluminum profile. Light runs down the length of the railing and draws a continuous line, with no visible hot spots. The profile protects the strip from impact, dissipates heat and gives a professional finish: it is the real LED handrail hardware. It suits wood handrails, brushed metal railings and tempered glass guards alike. In warm white for ambiance, or in RGB to play with colour.
Under the rail or in a groove: two ways to install
The simplest installation screws a surface profile under the existing handrail: no woodwork, and the light falls on the steps. For a solid wood rail, the most elegant technique is to route a continuous groove in the underside and recess a recessed profile holding the strip. The result: no visible wiring, and light that seems to come from the wood itself. Any cabinetmaker or millworker can cut this groove, and LEDCO supplies the profile, strip and power supply sized for your railing length and voltage.
Curved or spiral staircase: flex neon
For a curved or spiral staircase, or one with rounded transitions, flex neon LED is the right choice: its flexible silicone sleeve follows the curve, and its continuous surface gives a perfectly even line, even around a tight bend. It comes in side bend, like the 6.5x11mm flex neon, and in top bend, like the 10x10mm anti-glare flex neon: the direction of the curve decides the model. For colour, the 16x16mm RGBW flex neon adds white to the colours.
What to measure before ordering
A successful lighted handrail starts with five pieces of information:
- The total length: measure the whole railing, then add 10 % for cutting margin.
- The handrail cross-section: the profile width has to match it.
- The voltage: 12 V under 5 m, 24 V from 5 m and up, to limit voltage drop.
- The wattage: 5 to 8 W/m is enough for ambiance and safety.
- The use: indoor, or outdoor with sealed components.
Outdoor LED handrail lighting: what changes outside
For a home entrance, a deck or a balcony staircase, an IP65 rating at minimum is required for everything that stays exposed. The power supply has to be rated for outdoor use, and every join between segments is made with IP68 waterproof connectors. A 3000 K white matches porch lighting well. Custom-built: the line cut to the length of the railing
No need to cut and solder a roll yourself. Power supply and dimming: powering the railing
The strip runs at low voltage, 12 V or 24 V, with one of our 12 V and 24 V LED power supplies chosen according to the total wattage. It is hidden in the newel post or in the wall, never under the hand of someone walking by. One of our LED dimmers and controllers lets you lower the light at night, for soft wayfinding rather than full lighting.
Technical tips for handrail lighting
Choose a frosted diffuser. Opaque, it masks the LED dots and gives even light, even up close.
Light the steps, not the eyes. The light should fall downward; a source seen head-on dazzles on the way down.
Switch to 24 V for long railings. Beyond 5 m, voltage drop at 12 V makes the light fade at the end of the line.
Seal every outdoor join. IP68 connectors between segments keep water out.
Plan the wire path from the start. The newel post or the wall has to be able to take the power supply and the cable.

Can I add a handrail LED strip to an existing staircase?
Yes. A surface profile screws under the existing handrail, with no woodwork. The wire runs to the power supply hidden in the wall or in the newel post.
Handrail with integrated LED or a strip under the rail: what is the difference?
The integrated LED sits in a groove routed under the handrail: no profile sticks out, and the light seems to come from the wood. The surface profile goes on an existing railing in minutes. Both give the same line of light.
What LED handrail lights work outdoors?
A strip rated IP65 at minimum in its profile, a power supply rated for outdoor use and IP68 waterproof connectors between segments. Flex neon works well on curved outdoor railings.
12 V or 24 V for an LED stair railing?
12 V suits railings under 5 m. From 5 m and up, 24 V limits voltage drop and keeps the light even from one end to the other.
