LED GREENHOUSE LIGHTS

LED greenhouse lighting does two things that are often confused: it supplements the sun when there is not enough of it, and it lights the work that happens around the plants. March seedlings lack light, days get shorter from the fall onward, and the lower shelves sit in the shadow of the upper ones. For greenhouses, LEDCO offers a red and blue horticultural LED strip, aluminum profiles, LED floodlights from 30 W to 300 W, panels for the work rooms, and the power supplies and controllers that automate it all.

Which greenhouse lighting: supplementing the sun or lighting the work

Before choosing a fixture, name what it has to do. A greenhouse usually has four zones, and each calls for a different product:

  • Seedlings and grow shelves: a horticultural LED strip set close to the plants, giving the light the sun does not provide.
  • Centre aisle and work area: a white LED floodlight, to see and work early in the morning or at night, not to grow.
  • Potting room and office: LED panels in the drop ceiling, for detailed work.
  • Farm stand: a food-grade strip that shows off the harvest.

The rule that ties these zones together: horticultural light goes to the plants, white light goes to the people.

Red 660 nm and blue 450 nm horticultural LED strip for seedlings and shelves

Plants do not use every colour of light the same way. Blue, around 450 nm, supports vegetative growth and roots; red, around 660 nm, promotes flowering and fruiting. Our horticultural LED strip combines these two wavelengths. Attached under a shelf, to the ceiling of a propagator or along a grow rack, it lights the plants up close, along the full length of the row, even on grey days. It is part of our indoor LED strips.

Aluminum profile: secure, protect and clean the strip

A greenhouse is a humid place where watering is frequent and trays are constantly moved around. Installed in an aluminum profile for LED strips, the strip is better secured, protected from knocks and easier to wipe down, and the aluminum helps it shed heat. The diffuser spreads the light evenly over the trays, with no bright dots. On identical racks, the same assembly repeats from one shelf to the next; our custom design tool cuts profile and strip to the exact length of your shelves.

LED floodlights from 30 W to 300 W for high greenhouses and night work

In a commercial greenhouse with a metal structure or a high roof, an adjustable floodlight concentrates light on one specific area: a work station, a loading dock, the centre aisle. The LED floodlight 30W-50W-60W is enough for small greenhouses and shelters, the LED floodlight 70W-100W-150W suits medium-sized greenhouses, and the 200W-240W-300W floodlight large volumes. These units from our range of standard LED floodlights give white light for seeing and working; they do not replace horticultural lighting meant for growth.

2x4, 1x4 and 2x2 LED panels in the potting room and the office

Next to the greenhouse there is often a service building: potting room, order-prep room, office, storage for soil and containers. In these rooms with a drop ceiling, the 2x4 LED panel (36W-40W-45W), the 1x4 or the 2x2 give even, comfortable light for detailed work: transplanting cuttings, labelling pots, preparing orders. See all our LED panel lights. For the other buildings on the farm, our agricultural LED lighting page completes this one.

Food-grade LED strip for the farm stand

Many greenhouses sell their harvest on site. At the counter or in the display cases, the 16W/m food-grade LED strip, intended for meat, fruit and bakery displays, shows off fresh produce. Installed under a shelf or at the top of a display, it draws the customer's eye to the goods rather than the ceiling.

Power supply, timer and dimmer: the photoperiod without thinking about it

LED strips run on low voltage and are powered by a 12 V or 24 V LED power supply, chosen according to the strip and the total length installed, with some headroom. To respect the light and dark cycle your crops need, connect the lighting to a programmable timer: the plants get their lighting period at the same time every day, with no intervention. Our LED dimmers and controllers also let you adjust the intensity to the growth stage.

Technical tips for greenhouse lighting

Grow light for plants, white light for people. A white floodlight is not a grow light, and a red and blue strip lights a work area poorly.

The power supply stays dry. It goes outside the watering zone, somewhere ventilated; only the low-voltage wire runs along the shelves.

One profile per shelf, cut to its length. A line that stops short leaves the last pots in the shade.

The timer does the remembering. A regular photoperiod matters more than strong light one day and none the next.

Allow headroom on the power supply. A power supply running at its maximum heats up and ages fast; plan for more than the sum of the watts installed.

For a commercial LED greenhouse lighting project, our team works out with you the number of strips, the length of the profiles and the wattage of the power supplies based on the surface of your shelves: contact us.

LED greenhouse lighting FAQ

Which LED greenhouse lighting for spring seedlings?

A red and blue horticultural LED strip, set a few inches above the trays, in an aluminum profile. It gives the seedlings the light the March sun does not yet provide, along the full length of the shelf.

Does a white LED floodlight make plants grow?

Not the way horticultural lighting does. The LED floodlights in the range give white light for seeing and working: centre aisle, dock, potting area. For growth, you want the red and blue strip, placed close to the plants.

Is the horticultural strip suitable for houseplants?

Yes. For a shelf of tropical plants or herbs in the house, the principle is the same as in a greenhouse: a red and blue strip near the foliage, on a timer. Its pinkish light is visible; in a living space, keep it to a shelf or a closed cabinet.

How do I mount an LED strip under a shelf that gets watered?

In an aluminum profile with a diffuser, screwed under the shelf. The strip is protected from knocks and splashes, and the profile wipes clean with a cloth. The power supply itself stays outside the watering zone.

Can you price a complete commercial greenhouse?

Yes. Send us the length and number of your shelves, the height of the structure and the work areas to light. We work out the number of strips, profiles, floodlights and power supplies, and you receive a detailed quote before ordering.
