LED PUBLIC SPACES LIGHTS
Institutional LED lighting has requirements of its own: schools, arenas, libraries, community centres, municipal garages, parks and public plazas need light levels suited to each activity, compliant emergency lighting, durable fixtures that reduce maintenance and energy use that respects the public budget. For new construction as well as for the LED conversion of an existing building, LEDCO supplies the fixtures for every space, from the public plaza to the mechanical room, across Canada.
Public plazas, parks and forecourts: LED outdoor bollards
In a park, on a public plaza or in front of a municipal building entrance, LED outdoor bollards mark pedestrian paths and define spaces without raising tall poles in the landscape. Their low light guides passers-by in the evening, lights the ground where people walk and preserves the atmosphere of the place, without glare or spill onto neighbouring homes. They fit a paved forecourt as well as a park trail or the edge of a parking lot, and give a consistent visual signature to an entire urban layout.
Building perimeters and sports fields: LED wall packs and floodlights
Around the building, LED wall packs light doors, sidewalks and service areas; full cut-off versions direct light toward the ground and limit light pollution. For soccer and baseball fields or outdoor rinks, the sports field LED floodlight 300W-400W-500W-600W and its 700W-800W-900W-1000W version are designed for these large playing surfaces. The high power LED floodlights section brings together the models intended for large outdoor areas.
Gymnasiums, arenas and sports centres: LED high bays
In school gymnasiums, arenas and multi-sport halls with high ceilings, the high bay is the go-to solution. The linear LED high bay 200W-230W-270W and the 320W-360W-400W model provide an elongated distribution that follows the axis of the courts, while UFO high bays suit more compact halls. Compatible with 120V-347V, they adapt to the wiring of institutional buildings. Add a Bluetooth PIR sensor with 0-10V dimming so the lighting dims or turns off when the gymnasium is empty; the full range is in the LED high bays section, and the LED gymnasium lights page details the layout.
Classrooms, libraries and municipal offices: 2x2, 2x4 and 1x4 LED panels
In classrooms, libraries, municipal offices and community halls with suspended ceilings, LED panels take the place of old fluorescent fixtures in the ceiling grid. The 2x4 LED panel, the 2x2 and the 1x4 offer three colour temperatures, so you can choose the right tone for each room. Their diffusing surface spreads light with no hot spots over desks, shelves and reading tables. The formats and their accessories are gathered in the LED panel lights section.
Locker rooms, garages and mechanical rooms: vapour-tight fixtures and wraparounds
Arena locker rooms, municipal garages, public works shops and mechanical rooms call for sturdy fixtures that are easy to maintain. The 4' 60W multi-watt LED vapour-tight fixture NEMA 4X and the 8' CCT LED vapour-tight fixture are made for these damp, demanding spaces. For service corridors, storage rooms and maintenance rooms, 2', 3', 4' and 8' LED wraparound fixtures provide versatile linear lighting. These models are part of our range of integrated LED fixtures.
Emergency lighting and LED exit signs
In any public building, emergency lighting and exit signage are essential. LED emergency lights include emergency fixtures and single or double remote heads that extend coverage in corridors and stairwells. Metal "running man" combo emergency exit signs and their plastic versions clearly mark the exits, and a metal model with 6-24V remote power suits remotely powered installations.
Institutional LED lighting, building by building
Each type of space has its fixture family. The dashboard of a municipal project fits in a few lines:
- Park and public plaza: LED bollards for the paths, full cut-off wall packs on the façades.
- Outdoor sports field: sports field floodlights, from 300W to 1000W depending on the surface.
- Gymnasium and arena: linear high bays along the axis of the courts, 0-10V PIR sensor.
- Classrooms and library: 2x2, 2x4 and 1x4 panels in the grid, a single tone per building.
- Garage and locker rooms: NEMA 4X vapour-tight fixtures, wraparounds in the service corridors.
- Everywhere: "running man" signs, remote heads, emergency fixtures.
Our accomplishments include the bollards of two municipalities and a public plaza, as well as a secondary school project. They use the same fixture families as this page, installed in real public buildings.
Technical tips for institutional LED lighting
Check the building voltage before choosing. Institutional buildings are often wired at 347 V; high bays and the other fixtures offered in 120V-347V connect to it without a transformer.
Choose full cut-off near homes. The light goes to the ground, not into the neighbours' windows or up into the sky.
A sensor in every gymnasium. A hall that sits empty part of the day dims or switches off by itself with a 0-10V PIR.
A single tone per building. 3CCT panels are set at installation; fix the same colour temperature for all the classrooms.
Emergency lighting is validated on the plan. The number and location of heads and signs are confirmed with the electrician, room by room.
Vapour-tight wherever you hose down. Locker rooms, garages and mechanical rooms take a NEMA 4X fixture, not an open wraparound.

Institutional LED lighting FAQ
How do you convert a municipal building to LED without redoing everything?
Room by room, keeping the structure: the panels drop into the existing grid of classrooms and offices, the high bays replace the old gymnasium fixtures on the same 120V-347V wiring, and the wraparounds mount to the ceiling of the technical rooms. Emergency lighting is brought up to date in the same pass.
Which LED lighting for a school gymnasium?
Linear LED high bays, whose elongated distribution follows the axis of the courts, or UFO high bays in a more compact hall. A Bluetooth PIR sensor with 0-10V dimming lowers or switches off the lighting when the hall is empty.
Why does 120V-347V matter in a public building?
Because many institutional buildings are wired at 347 V. A 120V-347V compatible fixture connects directly to that network, with no transformer or extra circuit, which simplifies the conversion.
Which institutional LED lighting suits a park in the evening?
LED bollards along the paths: a low light that guides your steps and lights the ground without glare or spill onto neighbouring homes. On the façades, full cut-off wall packs direct the light downward.
How do I get a school, arena or community centre project assessed?
Send us the plans, the ceiling type of each room and the available voltage. Contact LEDCO for an assessment and a quote tailored to your project, building by building.
