LED ceiling panels have become the standard for offices, retail spaces, clinics and classrooms: a uniform light surface, with no glare and no dark zone, that directly replaces the recessed fluorescent fixtures of suspended ceilings. LEDCO carries the three standard formats, 1×4, 2×2 and 2×4, each with selectable wattage and three whites (3CCT), in 120 V-347 V, along with mounting kits for ceilings without a grid. Here is how to choose the format, set the light and plan the installation.

Which format for which room

The three formats do the same job; the room and the grid decide:

  • Open area, office, store: the 2×4, which fills a full-size tile and spreads the light.
  • Private office, exam room, classroom, reception: the 2×2, which lets you multiply the points of light.
  • Corridor, narrow ceiling strip, service counter: the 1×4, long and narrow.
  • Drywall ceiling with no grid: any of them, with the surface mounting kit.
  • Above an island or a meeting table: the 1×4 or the 2×4 with its suspension kit.

2×4 panel (36 W-40 W-45 W): the full-size tile for offices and stores

The 2×4 LED panel takes the place of a 2-by-4-foot tile in the suspended ceiling grid. It is the reference format for open areas. Its large surface spreads the light, which limits glare when you look up from your screen. Its wattage is set to 36, 40 or 45 W depending on the level you want: you light a work area more and a waiting room less with the same product.

2×2 panel (30 W-36 W-40 W): clinics, classrooms and smaller rooms

The 2×2 panel fills a 2-foot square tile. It suits smaller rooms or ceilings where you want to spread out several points of light: private offices, exam rooms, classrooms, reception areas. Adjustable to 30, 36 or 40 W, it delivers even lighting by multiplying the panels rather than concentrating the light in a few fixtures.

1×4 panel (25 W-30 W-36 W): corridors and narrow strips

The 1×4 panel is narrow and elongated. It is the choice for corridors, narrow ceiling strips or lines of light above a service counter. Adjustable to 25, 30 or 36 W, it pairs with the 2×4 and 2×2 of the same family when you want the same look and the same tint from one room to the next. The whole family is in our LED panel lights.

Multi-watt and 3CCT: one panel, several settings

All three panels are set at installation. The wattage is selected by a switch to match the brightness you want, and the colour temperature is chosen among three whites, from soft white to cool white, without changing products. The soft white suits a reception area or a waiting room; the cool white, work areas and workshops. For a contractor, that is a single product to order for several rooms with different needs, and the 120 V-347 V input covers residential circuits as well as commercial and industrial ones.

Mounting and suspension kits: when there is no suspended ceiling

In a standard grid, the panel drops in place of a tile: it is the fastest possible replacement for a fluorescent fixture. No grid? The mounting kit for multi-watt LED panels allows surface mounting on a drywall ceiling. For a cable suspension above an island, a counter or a meeting table, there is a hanging kit for 1×4 panels and a suspension kit for 2×4 panels. They are all grouped in our LED panel light accessories.

LED ceiling panels or troffers: why switch to panels

Compared with the fluorescent fixtures they replace, panels eliminate the ballast, the number-one failure point, cut consumption and deliver stable, flicker-free light: a real comfort factor where people spend the day. Flat, the panel blends into the ceiling with no visible housing. If you prefer the look of a troffer, LED troffers also install in the grid; our page on the recessed LED office troffer compares the two.

Technical tips for well-installed LED ceiling panels

Count the tiles before counting the panels. The format is decided by the grid: a ceiling in 2×2 tiles will not take a 2×4 without modification.

Set the same tint across the whole floor. Three whites to choose from is handy, as long as neighbouring panels are on the same setting.

Start at the middle wattage. Adjust after a day of work; going up or down a notch is done on site.

Check the building's voltage. 120 V-347 V covers the usual cases, but your electrician confirms the circuit before installation.

Plan the kit when you order. Surface mounting or cable suspension, the kit arrives with the panels and the installation takes one visit.

LED ceiling panels FAQ

Do LED ceiling panels directly replace a 2×4 fluorescent fixture?

Yes. The panel drops into the same opening in the grid, in place of the old fixture, and connects to the existing 120 V-347 V circuit. There is no more ballast or tubes to replace, and the light is stable from the moment it turns on.

Which wattage should I choose: 36, 40 or 45 W?

It depends on the ceiling height and the use of the room. A work area under a high ceiling takes the high setting; a waiting room under a standard ceiling, the low setting. Since the setting changes on site, start in the middle and adjust.

Can a panel be installed on a drywall ceiling?

Yes, with the surface mounting kit, which fixes the panel directly to the ceiling without a grid. For a room where you want a more architectural effect, the suspension kit lowers it on cables above an island or a table.

Which white tint for an office?

Most offices choose the middle white, crisp enough to work without being cold. The reception and waiting room benefit from a softer white, the workshop from a cooler one. The 3CCT setting is made at installation, panel by panel.

How many panels does a room need?

It depends on the floor area, the height and the use. Send us the ceiling plan with the grid and the dimensions, and we propose a layout, format by format.
