LED CLOSET LIGHT

A well-chosen LED closet light changes daily life: you find the right pair of shoes, read the label at the back of a shelf and tell navy from black. Entry closet, pantry, linen closet or walk-in, the solution almost always comes down to an LED strip in an aluminum profile, powered by a properly sized power supply. This page helps you choose the right wattage, from 4.8W/m to 20W/m, the right profile and the right power supply, with a 20% margin.

LED closet light: a strategy for each type of closet

A central ceiling fixture leaves shadows behind hanging clothes and under shelves. A strip under each shelf lights exactly what you are looking for, but the plan changes with the closet:

  • Entry closet: a single line of strip under the top shelf, aimed inward, is enough for coats and boots.
  • Pantry: a strip under every shelf, so you can read labels all the way to the back.
  • Linen closet: one discreet line of strip under the top shelf is enough to find towels and sheets.
  • Walk-in: general ceiling light to find your way, then strip under the shelves and along the hanging rod.

In a closet with hinged or sliding doors, the space is too narrow for several layers of light: one well-placed line beats three badly aimed sources.

4.8W/m or 9.6W/m LED strip: matching the light to the closet

For a shallow closet or a cabinet, the 4.8W/m LED strip gives discreet supplementary light. For a walk-in, a deep wardrobe or a pantry where you want to read labels easily, the 9.6W/m LED strip offers twice the wattage per metre; it is also the most common choice. Both are part of our indoor LED strips and can be cut to the length of each shelf.

11W/m COB LED strip: a line with no visible dots

In a closet, the strip is often at eye level: you see the line of light every time you open the door. The 11W/m COB LED strip gives a continuous line, without the row of small dots you see on a standard strip. It works well on open shelving, lit shoe racks or under a glass shelf. Even with a COB strip, a profile with a diffuser remains the best way to protect it and get a clean finish.

20W/m CCT LED strip: set the white after installation

For clothing, the recommended colour temperature is 4000K, a neutral white that faithfully reproduces colours: that is what lets you tell navy from black or shades of grey. Avoid overly yellow 2700K and bluish whites of 6000K and above, which tire the eyes and distort colours. If you are unsure, the 20W/m CCT LED strip lets you adjust the shade of white after installation. In a walk-in that doubles as a dressing room, aim for a CRI of 90 or higher.

Surface, recessed or corner profile: which one to choose

A bare strip under a shelf shows its individual LEDs and is exposed to bumps when you put boxes away. In an aluminum profile with an opal diffuser, it gives a uniform line and stays protected. A surface profile screws under the shelf; a recessed profile fits into a groove in the wood for a flush finish; a corner profile deals with the dark corners of a deep closet. For a custom LED closet light, our custom builder cuts the profile and strip to the exact length of your shelves.

24W to 96W dimmable power supplies: the calculation

The calculation is simple: multiply the strip's wattage per metre by the total installed length, then add a 20% margin. Two metres of 9.6W/m strip draw 19.2 W; with the margin, you reach about 23 W, and the 24W dimmable LED power supply is enough. Five metres of the same strip draw 48 W: with the margin, the 48W LED power supply would be too tight, so you move up to the 96W dimmable LED power supply.

Our full range of dimmable LED power supplies lets you adjust the intensity depending on the time of day. Also take into account the maximum length of a strip run without intermediate power: in a large walk-in, the strip is sometimes fed from more than one point.

Technical tips for closet lighting

Mount it at the shelf's front edge. Aimed inward, it lights what is inside the closet without dazzling whoever opens the door.

Use a profile, even in a small closet. It hides the points of light and protects the strip from boxes slid onto the shelf.

Keep the power supply out of sight. It goes above the closet, in the wall cavity or in a neighbouring room, somewhere it can be reached.

Add a sensor in the walk-in. On the ceiling, it turns the room on as you enter and keeps you from leaving the light on.

LED Closet Light FAQ

Which LED closet light should I choose?

An LED strip in a diffuser aluminum profile, mounted under the top shelf, is the most effective solution: it lights what you are looking for, where a ceiling fixture leaves shadows. Take 9.6W/m for a walk-in or a pantry, 4.8W/m for a small closet, and a power supply chosen with a 20% margin.

What strip wattage for a closet?

4.8W/m is enough for a shallow closet or a cabinet. 9.6W/m gives twice as much light per metre, useful in a walk-in, a deep wardrobe or a pantry. If the line is visible at eye level, the 11W/m COB strip avoids visible dots of light.

Which power supply for closet lighting?

Add up the wattage of all the strip installed, then add 20%: the power supply must exceed that total. A small closet often makes do with the 24W model; a large walk-in calls for the 96W instead. A dimmable model also lets you adjust the intensity.

Can I install a closet light with no outlet nearby?

An LED strip needs a power supply connected to household power, so there has to be a power source not too far from the closet. The low-voltage wire, on the other hand, is thin and easy to hide along an upright or under a shelf. If there is no power source nearby, an electrician can bring one in.

What white for a pantry or linen closet?

4000K, a neutral white, shows labels and colours faithfully without looking cold. The 20W/m CCT strip lets you adjust the shade after installation if you are torn between a warmer and a more neutral white.
