The bathroom ceiling is divided into protection zones per Canadian electrical standards (based on IEC 60364-7-701). Zone 0 (inside the tub or shower receptor) requires IP67. Zone 1 (above the tub or shower up to 2.25m from floor) requires IP45 minimum — IP44 is accepted in practice for ceiling downlights at this height. Zone 2 (within 60cm of the tub outside Zone 1) and the rest of the bathroom require IP22 minimum. For simplicity, most homeowners and electricians use IP44 downlights across the entire bathroom ceiling — compliant in all zones and available in the same formats and finishes as standard IP20 downlights. A 6–9W IP44 LED downlight (equivalent to 50–75W halogen) in neutral white 3000–4000K produces 500–750 lumens — sufficient for general lighting of a 5–10 sq m bathroom.

The upward light bounces off the back tile and creates a halo that adds depth to the niche. In warm white 2700K, this lighting complements the spa ambiance of an Italian shower with integrated bench.
