BATHROOM LIGHTING: BRIGHTEN UP YOUR DAILY LIFE SHAWINIGAN

The bathroom is the room where lighting has the most impact on daily experience — applying makeup, shaving, getting ready in the morning. Poor bathroom lighting design creates shadows under the nose and chin (ceiling-only lighting), overly cold light that gives a pallid complexion in the mirror, or a clinical atmosphere unfavorable to evening relaxation. Successful bathroom lighting combines sufficient general illumination, precise mirror lighting for facial care, and adjustable ambiance for relaxing bath moments. LEDCO offers LED fixtures suited to each bathroom zone, with the IP certifications required for water-presence safety.

IP44 LED downlights for bathroom ceilings

The bathroom ceiling is divided into protection zones per Canadian electrical standards (based on IEC 60364-7-701). Zone 0 (inside the tub or shower receptor) requires IP67. Zone 1 (above the tub or shower up to 2.25m from floor) requires IP45 minimum — IP44 is accepted in practice for ceiling downlights at this height. Zone 2 (within 60cm of the tub outside Zone 1) and the rest of the bathroom require IP22 minimum. For simplicity, most homeowners and electricians use IP44 downlights across the entire bathroom ceiling — compliant in all zones and available in the same formats and finishes as standard IP20 downlights. A 6–9W IP44 LED downlight (equivalent to 50–75W halogen) in neutral white 3000–4000K produces 500–750 lumens — sufficient for general lighting of a 5–10 sq m bathroom.

LED mirrors and vanity lighting

The backlit LED mirror is the bathroom lighting revolution of recent years. Unlike a wall sconce placed above the mirror (which projects light downward and creates facial shadows), an LED mirror with perimeter backlighting diffuses soft, uniform light from all four sides of the mirror — eliminating shadows and offering natural, faithful complexion rendering. A quality LED mirror integrates CRI 90+ LEDs at 3000K (for warm rendering that flatters skin tones) or CCT-adjustable from 2700–6000K, allowing switching between "warm ambiance" mode for an evening bath and "daylight" mode for makeup or shaving. For double-sink vanities or bathrooms where the mirror spans the full wall width, a horizontal LED aluminum profile installed above the mirror (at 180–200cm from floor) and a second profile below (at 90–100cm) frame the mirror with light for a true makeup station. In neutral white CRI 90+ at 4000K, this bilateral lighting reproduces theatre dressing room lighting conditions — the most demanding standard for makeup rendering. LEDCO fabricates aluminum profiles to your mirror's exact dimensions.

Shower niche and Italian shower lighting

The shower niche recessed into the wall is the finishing detail of high-end contemporary bathrooms — and a well-integrated LED strip transforms it into a spectacular decorative element. A high-density (120 LEDs/m), CRI 90+, 24V IP67 LED strip installed in a mini U-shaped aluminum profile recessed under the niche shelf illuminates care products from below for a refined showcase effect. The upward light bounces off the back tile and creates a halo that adds depth to the niche. In warm white 2700K, this lighting complements the spa ambiance of an Italian shower with integrated bench. For Italian showers with a separate shower ceiling or waterproof drop ceiling, small-diameter (3") IP65 or IP67 LED downlights can be installed directly in the shower zone for functional cabin lighting. Combined with the niche LED strip and IP44 downlights in the rest of the bathroom, they create a multi-layer bathroom lighting system that addresses all uses — preparation, relaxation, care — with professional spa aesthetics.
